Stuff In My Garage

I mentioned a while back that I was having a garage sale soon...
well the time has come.
I'm getting ready and the big day is Saturday.

So...to start out I need to tell you a little story.
Get comfy...grab a Diet Coke...mute the TV.

My husband is an attorney and mostly practices family law.
Wills, divorces, custody decisions, estates, you get the idea.
Earlier this year he handled the estate of a friend who had no family.
His heirs were distant cousins.
My husband was in charge of distributing this man's worldly possessions
and selling his home.
Luckily the home sold. The night before the closing my husband went to this guy's
place and loaded up everything that was "left-over."
Meaning all the stuff no one wanted.

That night was months ago and since then, all this stuff has been sitting in my garage.
Bins and boxes of it.
So I decided I was going to sell it all in my garage sale.
Legally I can't keep the money...we will have to donate it.
But I can at least get it out of my garage.

It was mostly odds and ends of this person's life.
The last remnants representing his life here on earth...
but I discovered a few really interesting things.

This covered casserole dish.
No markings on the bottom.
I think the design is maybe a bird?

Chipped plate and some sort of soap dish?

Ginger jar with no lid.

Copper sauce pan and casserole.

LOVE these plates.
They are in perfect condition.

This is the marking on the back of each one.
Any idea?

English ironstone bowl.

Not that old because it says dishwasher safe.

These 7 plates are Royal Copenhagen Denmark.
Each has the date of the year it was made.

They all have the same marking...except the title of the plate is of course different.
It's in English and Danish perhaps?

This darling little set of nesting bowls.
No markings but who cares?

I've saved the best for last.
An English ironstone platter.
No chips and just a little bit of crazing.

2 different markings on the back.
This one is fired on.

This one seems to be stamped.

I did a little research.

This platter dates from between 1866 and 1876.
It was manufactured at a pottery in Stoke-On-Trent in England.
This area is home to many potteries including Royal Stafford.

I couldn't find a value on this particular platter.
Like most heirlooms, it's monetary value is secondary to it's personal value.

So...here's the question.
If this is the left over stuff,
doesn't it make you wonder about the good stuff?

Thanks for stopping by...

Wow... I can't believe that was the 'leftover' stuff. For a man with no family, I think he must have had good taste, because I really love the blue and white items.

I'm wondering if the bird on that one plate is a phoenix???

Good luck with your garage sale, Ann- I wish I lived close enough to scoop up some of those treasures!

BTW, I adore your photo on your home page! It looks like you are rockin' some fabulous highlights!!

Hi Ann,
You have some fabulous stuff there! It should sell very well, I think, you should buy the ironstone platter though, it is worth something, if nothing other than it is beautiful and so old.
Some of those symbols looked Oriental, imported by a Chinese store in the US, maybe. I have seen those up here in Oriental grocery stores.
Good luck, I hope your weather is good and you have a nice breeze!
Hugs, Cindy

Wow, do I ever love those dishes - all of them! You shouldn't have any problem selling them. I'd buy the ironstone platter and the 3 bowls. I'd say the blue and white is chinese porcelain but maybe not expensive. However I have a piece with a similar mark and it's an antique so you might want to check with an antique dealer just in case. I also noticed your photo on your page - very nice! All the best with your sale! Wish I could stop by! Blessings, Pamela

This is some pretty good left over stuff! This man or someone in his family had very good taste. I like it all!

I agree with some of the others that maybe you should buy the platter. It is very nice! I'm sure you'll be glad to get the space back and sure those who happen upon your garage sale will be glad to find these neat things!

Good luck.

The blue plates with the dates are highly collectable in the south especially. I have paid 45.00 each for mine. I have dates that represent our marriage year, birth years for my sons and daughters in law and now the grandchildren. They look stunning grouped in my dining room. Always a conversation starter.

Love your blog.

I hope you can keep a few of these treasures . . . as rent for using your garage.

Yes, I would have loved to have seen the rest of his stuff.

Fondly,
Glenda

Loved the copper set. Kinda sad the poor guy had no one to leave this stuff too. Our families have been giving us things like these for years now. I need a basement to store it all. I will say this gentleman had some very nice taste indeed!

Omg I'm in love with all the leftover stuff! I hope you are going to keep some if not all! Wonder if his family was clueless to these gems!

I would have a difficult time parting with any of your great items. The copper ware caught my eye because I love the warmth it gives to a kitchen. Hope you make lots of money for your charity. Shannon

The Royal Copenhagen are Christmas plates, a new one each year. I get one each year for our anniversary. The new ones are expensive ($85) and the really old pre-1950 are very pricey, but the ones from the 60s-80s can be had on e-bay for about $10. I have ones for the birth years of each of our 4 boys. Yes, it's a blue and white world in my house ;)

Wow, those pieces are amazing. It's sad you can't keep any of them but hopefully you'll at least be able to find them new homes so you can walk through your garage again. Good luck on Saturday!!

Oh my, I can't even think of having a garage sale, especially in this heat. Good luck!

I would be wondering about the "good stuff" too. It always makes me feel a bit melancoly to think of someone's treasures being left with no family or friend to claim them. The history is always so intriguing and wish there was a way to find out.

It looks as this gentlemen might have had some really good stuff. You know how that saying goes, "What is one man's junk is another man's treasures!" I love anything blue and white so I would have been pretty happy to have found these goodies in my garage!Enjoy your new pretties, Kathysue

Hope your garage sale went well, Ann! We are getting ready to move and I am having my first ever yard/moving sale this Saturday. I'm hoping I don't regret that I didn't just throw the stuff in my Explorer and go to Goodwill with it all! I am looking forward to getting that area of the garage cleared out {especially since something else makes it onto the pile every day!}.
