Corner Cabinets Update

Projects.
Are we ever without one?
This one was actually painless and pretty fun.
My goal was to lighten and update
the corner cabinets in my dining room.

The story behind how we got these is a bit unusual.
We inherited the table and chairs from a cousin of my husband's.
She was a lovely old lady who lived in Tulsa, OK.
As we were discussing the logistics of getting
the furniture from Oklahoma to Ohio I asked my husband
if by chance there was a china cabinet?
I nearly died when he told me there were 2 corner cabinets.
I had always loved the look and was thrilled to think I
might actually have them in my house.
We purchased the cabinets at her estate sale
via her neighbor who was our "shopper."
The whole shebang was loaded in a moving
van and arrived on my door step in perfect condition.
That was 15 years ago.
I love them as much as the day I got them.

Painting these babies was never an option.
But I really wanted a lighter look so
I decided to paint just the insides of both cabinets.
Here is one with the original back.
Lovely isn't it?

If I were a purist I suppose I would have left them alone.
I'm so not a purist.
Annie Sloan to the rescue.

Here we are after one coat.

I have always wished they were lit so I picked
these lights up at Lowe's.

Here is one of them finished.
I replaced the wood shelves with glass.
I just took the original shelves to a glass shop and had them custom cut.

I simplified the wall arrangement
and eliminated the red.
I think it helps to lighten things up and it's not so busy.

This is the other side.

The green stemware was my mother-in-law's.

She collected pigs.
This one is a treasure.

I'd love to someday fill these cabinets
with white ironstone.
Pitchers, platters, etc.
First I have to figure out where to store
everything that's in them.
Still thinking about that one.

What a great idea you had to paint the inside of the cabinet. You preserved the integrity of the piece while lightening its look. The glass shelves helped, too, I'm sure.

Ann, thank you for the comment. I was really scared about distressing and in the end just went for it.
I do all my projects by myself also, just hope to have some input from others while I redo our bedroom.
Have a good night!

Nice! Really makes a difference in how things look displayed now. BTW, my hubby inherited glasses from his mother exactly like yours except in red. Do you know anything about them..i.e., brand, etc?

To be honest, at first my heart sank a little when I saw the first photos. The detail was pretty. But I see how well it turned out. A simpler background really helps showcase the collectibles. Pretty! Where are you finding all this time? lol You're on a roll! Love the vases and on your buffet table too.

Gorgeous update! I always think-why be a purist if you don't like the piece the way it is.

Is that Venetian glass I see on the top shelf? I've got a small collection that I adore.

Your cabinets look great with the light updated paint job and glass shelves. Those little lights are fantastic to use in places where there is no electrical cord. I use them in various places.------Shannon

Ann I love your corner cabinets and you did a great job painting them. You're so smart to have glass shelves made and also the little light will add so much sparkle to your china and glassware. I'm wondering... was that wall paper lining the cabinets before you painted it? Did you have to remove it or just painted over it?

Babs

I have a beautiful vintage cabinet that my in-laws sent all the way from New York for me. Everytime I look at it, I think it would be so cool if it had lighting inside but would never drill to add one. I will be looking for these lights. Thanks so much!

Ann you had asked me last week about white pumpkins being grown. Guess what, I saw one today on a blog and it was grown, very pretty too!~ So yes they grow in white. I hear they are more expensive though if you buy them white. I just bought a faux one today...me bad, but I could not wait any longer LOL! I was excited about the giveaway too, you do beautiful work!

That is a wonderful makeover. It looks like it was original milk paint. My father has a really old corner cabinet like this and it was painted with white milk paint. So, you did the perfect thing to it. Very nice!
Thank you for linking it to Home Sweet Home!
