Pottery Barn
This next sofa may have one too many pillows
but I loved the blue and white so I wanted to share it.
Scale, Texture & Pattern,
there were a few comments asking what to do with
pillows when you are entertaining.
One commenter said she actually removed all of her
pillows the last time she had people over...
but her room looked bare and plain.
A good solution would be to have baskets in the
room to hold the pillows when they are in the way.
You won't lose your color and texture,
and there's a place for everyone to sit.
Here is my family room.
This room is all about the TV and we sit on the sofa.
All the time.
I put baskets on the hearth to hold the pillows
so they don't end up on the floor.
Here is the room in photo shoot mode.
This isn't really what it looks like in real life.
All of these guidelines are just my own opinions.
Take them or leave them.
At the end of the day
whatever you do in your own home
needs to make you happy.
If you love a sofa full of pillows...
and you smile every time you walk in that room,
by all means go for it.
If you are a less is more sort of person,
let your furniture reflect that as well.
Next up in the series:
Oh...

Your pillow series is neat, Ann. As a seamstress for over 40 years my home has oodles and oodles of pillows. We won't even discuss the bedrooms! The problem is storing them.....the solution is pillow covers! There are infinite ways to hide closures and I'm always looking for new ideas......keep up the fun!
A great series, Ann. We love pillows here, and not just me. We use our pillows for propping and they need to be washable and smooshy. Yours are so pretty and beautifully made. I love the idea of putting extras in baskets.
I like pillows for they add color and texture to chairs and sofas. Mine are mostly needlepoint that I've done so they hold memories as well. Shorter guests appreciate the pillows and if they don't, they can always put them on the floor (as I've seen guests do).
love them all, especially the long skinny ones, my husband hates pillows and I have down sized ours alot, I think you're right we mustn't get carried away, there must be room to sit, not all rooms are for viewing only, we must live in our homes,
This is great series and help to us Ann. Thankfully I have the right amount and size of pillows on our sofa. :) The baskets are a great idea. Pamela
Ha-ha! I did a post once about too many pillows and how aggravated I get having to pick them up off the floor all the time! My family would love it if I just threw in the towel (or should I say, threw in the pillow) and got rid of them altogether. I love pillows though, so I'm willing to suffer.
I like two on each end - poofed and chopped. :) The sofa in our living room has one extra in the middle. It's a really cute one and deserves to be there.
You know I love my pillows. I actually do remove them and fill up the baskets in the room when we have lots of people over.
I LOVE pillows too Ann, but in my case I don't know if that is a good thing because I always like them to look just so! Let's face the facts, being a family of five and the kids always having friends over that just ain't happening! It's like I watch and wait for them to get up so I can go and fix them. Go ahead you can call me CRAZY LOL:)
I love your pillow series! and I am in the same delima. I have an ottoman piled high with pillows becausa ther are too many pillows on the sofa. Although, it's not a room that we use very often, it had way too many, but I cannot do away with them. Can't wait till your next series. Thanks
I'm enjoying your series on pillows. I'm a linky follower. I just jumped on the bandwagon.
Love the pillow series! I didn't thing that I'd ever say it, but I have enought pillows...now I just need a great varity of covers :)
Debbie
Great post and I love pillows. Mine have to be able to be used and still look good...well with the exception of the burlap elephant one. It just sits in the foyer. Thanks for the dos and don'ts photos and the great suggestions.
Did you ever see "Regarding Henry" with Harrison Ford? The main character was a type-A jerk who was shot during a robbery and developed amnesia which turned him into a decent fellow who didn't really fit in his uppercrust world anymore. Anyway, there is a scene when he returns home from the hospital and he's settling in for his first night back in his own bed. The bed is loaded with pillows and he throws them on the floor, one by one, until he's finally comfortable. Whenever I see furniture covered in pillows, I think of this scene!
Ah hah! I need to put a basket in my living room just for my pillows! That is a great idea, thanks so much!
You family room is really pretty, I really like your painted fireplace. If my son finds that he does not have time to work on mine, I will just paint it. Seeing yours made up my mind.
This series on pillows is great, thanks.
Hugs, Cindy
So, when do you put the pillows back on? At night when you go to bed or when company comes?
I have done it both ways over they years, Ann. Over the top with the pillows and then a more spartan look for rooms with lots of use. I now do simple so that we can throw the pillows in a basket that shoves under a side table when we want more open space. Great post and fun! xo Diana
Great post Ann. I LOVE ALL PILLOWS.
In fact I just purchased pillow inserts at Ikea for only $6. 20x20
They are also feather filled.
Just an fyi I'M HAVING A GIVEAWAY.
Fun post! I am really enjoying this pillow series. Very thought provoking. I am not a minimalist. I probably sometimes have a problem with more is more! lol Nice to stop and re-examine something like this... Thanks.
I loved this post! I love pillows, but agree that sometimes there can be too many to enjoy using the furniture. It is certainly a matter of personal preference. I prefer a few instead of the entire back of the sofa covered with them. I think if they are colored with pattern, then even fewer are necessary. Otherwise it looks too busy. Looking forward to your next installment in this series!
I'm a big pillow girl too.
Love pillows to take a room up a notch! I agree people tend to go over board and make it pretty impossible to sit down on the sofa comfortably, plus the look can become too contrived. You have shown some great examples of how and how not to do your pillow, Kathysue
Boy this is always a problem with my hubby. He wants to toss the pillows off immediately. I keep it to a minimal amount for that reason alone. We just stand the pillows next to the sofa on the side.
There is a movie with Ben Stiller/Along Came Polly where he had been going along with his fiance's idea with a ton of pillows on the bed. They put them one by one into a built in unit along the wall with a covered top...it goes on later with a revolt he had on them!
There always seems to be a tug and pull between looking good and being practical.
I always like to hold onto a pillow when I'm sitting. Must be a comforting thing for me... LOL
What?! You mean your living room isn't always neat and tidy? ha ha Blogging and magazine photos never show the reality, do they? *grin*
I love that blue and white couch/pillow combo. I also really like your idea of having baskets to put the pillows in when company is over.
Love your Pillow Series and looking forward to your next issue!! blessings ~ Tanna
Love the amount you have and the idea of a basket to put them in when not in use. I can't wait for the next series as am about to make my first pillow soon!
I agree with you on the right balance of the number of pillows. Too many can be, well, too many! I'm your newest follower on GFC and the new Linky Followers. If you get a chance maybe you can check out my blog! Hugs, Kim
I love lots and lots of pillows. I am now following on Linky!! Finally got it set up on my blog too.
Great post. I have always put baskets out for the same reason. My pillows never stay put! Except for people who hold them,(my hubby tends to do this.) Sometimes I don't want people touching them b/c they just do all sorts of crazy things to them. Is that awful of me? ;) I use baskets in the bedroom too. No one ever wants to take time to put the pillows on the bed. Like your mom said, we do it when company comes,"for show."
