Ever since I was a young girl I have loved fabric.
It all started when I was about 10 or 11. My mom signed me up
for a summer sewing class at our local Singer store.
That was the beginning.
I loved it.
All the tools, notions, fabrics and tricks of the trade.
I spent many happy days over several summers
in the back of that store sitting at a sewing machine.
The first summer I didn't sign up for the lessons the ladies
in the store actually called my mom and asked where I was.
I had found a summer job.
Life interrupted.
During my teens and early twenties I sewed very little.
After that I "re-discovered" my love of sewing several times.
The first time was the year my daughter was 2.
She told me she wanted to be a white cat for Halloween.
I made her the coolest cat outfit.
Many costumes followed.
My all-time favorites were these bunny costumes.
My kids have accused me of forcing them to be bunnies for several years in a row.
If I remember correctly, it was only 2.

| I made the giant carrots from felt. Don't you love the face paint? |
When my son was 3 I began to get restless
as a stay-at-home-mom but I wasn't ready to go back to work.
Re-enter my sewing machine.
I hooked up with a friend and we began travelling around
to craft shows.
I made appliqued girls jumpers, wall hangings and Christmas stockings.
 |
| I didn't make this but it's very similar to what I did. |
I never made any real money but it was sure fun.
Most importantly it gave me something to do.
For the past 15 years I have sewed mostly home furnishings for myself
and an occasional relative or friend.
I was always sewing something.
New pillows, curtains, cushions, whatever.
Now, at another crossroads in my life, sewing has once again
come to my rescue and given me something to do.
My most recent discovery is the world of vintage linens. I am hooked.
Antique textiles tell such a story.
I'll be sharing a few of those stories in upcoming posts.
The first one will be on...

I hope your week is off to a good start.
At the moment I am in danger of slipping into a food coma.
We celebrated Fat Tuesday today.
Let's just say I celebrated a bit too much.
Blessings to all as we enter this season of Lent.

I had no idea you were such a sewer. No wonder your pillows are so good. I love those runners you showed.
Are you giving up chocolate for lent? Too funny you over-celebrated fat Tuesday. I'm hoping for a big dollop of discipline during lent to not crave chocolate. Wish me luck!
Ann those runners are beautiful!
So funny.. I started sewing again when I was pregnant with my first daughter. :) Love those runners!
Beautiful runners Ann..Hope you have the best week ever..hugs and smiles Gloria
My life is so parallel to yours. It's stunning. If we lived in the same town, I wonder if we would know each other and if I would think to myself, like I am now, "Boy, so glad I met Ann. She's such a great friend."
I love your work, you are an amazing seamstress! Have a great week,
Debbie
They say we are attracted to our gifts all along... certainly appears to be so with you, Ann! You are a very gifted seamstress. blessings ~ tanna
I think it's great to have the skill to sew. I can't even sew on a button. I really needed to be very wealthy so I could have a stylist, an interior decorator, but I can do my own cooking. :) Leigh
Whew, I am feeling so much better. I had been comparing my one-year sewing skills to your lifetime sewing skills (and obviously coming up short). No wonder you are so amazing at it. What are you giving up for Lent?
I love the post, Ann! Those costumes & kids are so adorable. I love the runners, too.
I love vintage linens. I look forward to seeing more of your projects! I do not sew at all, but I like needle crafts.
I sure wish I had that talent Ann. I love fabrics and it would be so nice to change things up a little more often if I knew how to sew. So glad you started young, and pursued your passion.
Wow, this is so like me too- except I'm not sewing much these days. Age about age 11 I decided I wanted to make a "shift" dress and my Mom got me started. She always sewed dresses for us and she made lots of curtains. I sewed for years but it fell by the wayside for a while until I started sewing some of my kids clothing. Then I got into making Bunnies and Amish dolls and sold them at a local store. After I figured I was not really making any money I decided to quit doing that. I pretty much hung up the sewing needles and now I only sew when I have to!
Sewing.....I love it and have done it all my life! I had a dead period when my girls grew up but have recently started again thanks to blogland! I have things in my Etsy shop and it is SO much fun to renew that pastime! I can't wait to see those sites you are going to share. There used to be a bumper sticker in the 80's that my sewing friends and I laughed over.
"Whoever dies with the most fabric...WINS"....I still have a piece of corduroy from the 80's that was going to be a jumper...ick! LOL
I absolutely love fabric unfortunately Inever picked up sewing I keep thinking about learning with a friend of mine.
Gorgeous vintage fabrics and runners. Love them.
Sewing is such a handy talent! I have made more than a few pairs of jammies for husband!
I love to sew also, but finding the time is hard. You are very talented and I love the new runners you are making:)
I enjoy sewing as well! Home dec is most enjoyable because I don't have to fit anything on my body! Love the runner!
I spotted that gorgeous runner on Pinterest :0) So cool to see how things have evolved over the years.
I gave up coffee for Lent. Eek!
Ann, the runners that you are creating with vintage fabrics are incredible. I want one so badly! I am not so good with a sewing machine. My mother sewed a lot, and it was just easier to get her to make something. I wish I had a machine now, though.
Beautiful runners!
I have a thing for fabric too. Mostly for decorating. I used to buy calico for .29 a yard from P N Hirsch when I was a kid and make curtains for my room. My mother always encouraged me and helped me sew them. Helped much latter when I do a lot of decorating for a living. Richard from My Old Historic House.
I love both of those vintage fabrics!
I think it's wonderful to be able to make money doing a trade that you love. Your creations are so pretty and very well made. I look forward to seeing more of your creations as your shop grows.
Cannot believe those Halloween costumes! You have always been a great seamstress xoLisa
What a neat story. It DOES seem that sewing came your aid just when you needed it. I love your work and I'm glad to know that you are so experienced! Can't wait to see what you have coming up!
XO,
Jane
You had me at Singer- That is what I learned to sew on, too. I have sewed off and on my whole life and just now dug my machine out after not sewing for several years. I am so looking forward to it. Your textiles are beautiful!!!! Love the runners you made with them- xo Diana
Love the bunny costumes that you made for your kids. The big carrot with it is so cute.
You do beautiful work and it's great that you are able to sell it through your store. I'm sure things don't stay listed for long!
Hello dear Ann,
I loved reading the story of how you came to sew.
I too loved sewing and longed to learn how to create beautifully, but I lived way back in the woods of Canada where there were no such thing as sewing classes.
I begged my mom many times to teach me, but she felt unqualified, so I stuck to sewing outfits for my barbie doll until I got to grade eight. Then I took sewing in school for the next several years, loving the creative skills that I acquired there.
I sewed off and on after finishing High School. I began sewing more and more as my baby girl grew up and I loved making pretty dresses for her.
I think we are kindred spirits, dear Ann. I look forward to reading your upcoming posts on vintage fabrics. Perhaps I can learn something and possibly get started on using them, too.
Have a wonderful day.
Love and hugs, Cindy
What a fun story! It's great how you just kept going back to sewing through the years. Your newest items...the runners...are gorgeous!
What a great post, Ann, love hearing your "history" with sewing! Your new linens are just amazing and so beautiful! xo
Ann, you are so very talented! I seem to want everything I see in your shop...and then I think of a jillion other things too.
Hope you are doing well!

Oh, how I wish I had formal sewing lessons. I'm basically self-taught along with advice from my Mom. And, my Mom made my clown costume for Halloween. I wore that sucker for 4 years. She kept adding panels to it so it would fit as I grew taller! Looking back, it was pretty cute. And, yes, I'm super behind in my blog reading. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
