What is it?

Since my father-in-law passed away we have been clearing out his condo. It’s been bittersweet as I’m sure many of you know. Good memories but sad at the same time. Anyway, I came across this little enamelware pitcher. I’m intrigued by enamelware at the moment so I got excited when I found this…and it’s blue. That in itself makes it perfect.

I’m just not sure exactly what it is. A little pitcher to pour warm maple syrup? Or cream? If you know what this is used for please let me know. I’m dying of curiosity here.

Thanks for stopping by…wishing everyone a beautiful weekend!

Thoughts from my friends...

  1. 1

It is adorable. I am not sure what it is either.

  2. 2

I agree, used for melted butter. My mom had one. Great find. Hugs, Marty

  3. 3

That’s adorable, Ann. I’ve seen these long handled pitchers, but I never knew what they were for.

  4. 4

I would use it to served soup.

  5. 5

The butter melter, if there is such a word, is very pretty, Ann. I’m sorry that you have to deal with going through your loved one’s belongings but I’m sure he would love that you appreciate his things and find them useful. Have a wonderful weekend.——– Shannon

The pot is beautiful and matches the blue of your pitcher. I have seen them listed as chocolate pots — much preferred over butter, at least by me :)

I’m sorry to hear that you’re busy cleaning out the condo, but glad you have family to help. Grief is a slow process. Take care.

….and I meant to say – Turkish coffee is so bitter – I’d probably rather use it for butter…or melting chocolate!

  8. 8

Very weird – my second comment published, but the first didn’t. What I said was that I am sure that it is a Turkish Coffee maker, and not a butter pot. There are many Turkish coffee pots on ebay and you can see that some are quite fancy, but some are simple and obviously for home use, like yours. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=turkish+coffee+pot

I believe it is a butter melter….like to pour it on Popcorn….

Jane @ Cottage at the Crossroads says:

I just googled it and I found some on EBay. They were described as butter melters. What a special remembrance of your father-in-law.

I was thinking it was for pouring melted wax into those old fashioned tapered candle molds.

One would need it small and easily controllable with a spout.

  12. 12

When I was looking for enamel ware dippers, what you have is what I kept finding. So not sure, but its very cute:)

  13. 13

It is an old lard or butter melter. My mother tipped one once and ran hot grease all down the front of her leg. It was a terrible burn and took ages to heal. xo Diana

    Hi Anne

What a sweet piece of enamelware. I love enamelware!! I think this is a butter server for melted butter or cream sauce. My mother used to use this little item to pour cream sauce over cauliflower.
Great piece and it’s so nice that you found this little treasure. It will have so much more meaning.

  15. 15

I have an orange one just like it. I use it for sauces and melted butter is perfect.

  16. 16

Interesting! I’ll have to keep my eye open for those now! I’ve never seen one before…. So cute! Melted butter is sooooo good, too!

  17. 17

What a cute little pot for melting butter – and in the most perfect shade of blue.

  18. 18

It looks like you found your answer Ann. What a great find. Such a bright blue against your whites.

  19. 19

I love the blue color…I’m such a fan! Hope the cleaning out goes easily! I’m sure it will be bittersweet but you will likely find more lovely things to remind you of your FIL .

  20. 20

How sweet it is Ann and I see you now have an answer. It is the best color of blue for you too. I do not have a microwave and still melt butter in a small stainless pan on my stove. I do not miss the microwave one bit by the way.

  21. 21

    They are butter meters.

  22. 22

The were marketed in the 1970x for melting butter. I had an orange one that I used for years and years. I did use mine for heating syrup, too. The handle on mine finally saw its last day.

    Enjoy the memories, Ann.♥

  23. 23

Not sure but it is a beautiful blue and perfect for you. Have a wonderful Sunday!

  24. 24

Having cleared my mother’s home and J’s mother’s, I know how bittersweet this time is.

I love the little pitcher. I don’t know anything about it, bit I can see why you like it. Plus, it has sweet memories.

  25. 25

Ann, The piece is so cute and it’s my favorite color. Looks like others knew it was for melting butter.

  26. 26

I agree with the others it is a butter melter. Having just lost a loved one I know how bitter sweet it can be at any given moment. So sorry for your loss, but happy that you can reflect on the sweet memories.

    I love its color!

  28. 28

I love the color, too. I have no idea, but it’s cute. Butter melter sounds good.

    I hope you’re well.

Another vote for Turkish coffee pot, though the ones I have are copper or brass,

    butter!

  31. 31

My first thought was that the sweet little blue pitcher is a butter warmer or melter. It is a bitter sweet experience to go through a parents belongings. We have done it three times, that’s too many!
Thanks so much for your sweet comments on my last post, I will be going home Thursday.
    Hugs, Cindy

I have one very similar ! My In-Laws are from Syria – it is used to make Turkish coffee (similar to espresso). We have had a few over the years that my in laws bring over with them so they can have their “Arabic” coffee here !

  33. 33

I collect these in orange, Ann. I know that people have identified them as butter melters, but I have them in graduated sizes. That makes me think they are measuring cups.

  34. 34

whatever it is, it’s very cute and I love the long handle! That blue color is pretty special too.

  35. 35

What a nice rememberance of your father-in-law. I enjoy enamelware too!

  36. 36

I had a green one and used it to melt butter! (That was before microwaves!)

  37. 37

That is a sweet little butter melter. What a pretty color too Ann! It will hold great sentiment every time you look at it.

So...tell me what YOU think!
