Pieces of Autumn 2012 ~ Part I

Like many of you, Autumn is my favorite season of the year. Cooler temperatures give relief after the heat of summer. Autumn signals the fresh start of a school year, shorter days, a new football season, stunning colors before the leaves fall. The first glimpse of fall On Sutton Place always appears on my front porch. My front door to be exact.

I really changed things this year. Don’t faint from shock but I’m using another basket in place of a wreath. (That’s two in a row if you are paying attention!)

I first saw this basket on the blog Chateau Chic.  Mary Alice wrote a blog post about the new basket she got for her front door. I just fell in love with the color. More than the color though I fell in love with the shape.

So just out of curiosity I emailed Mary Alice to see where she purchased it. She responded with a link to a shop where she lives…which is Virginia. Not exactly right around the corner.

After that I dismissed it and moved on. A few days later I received an email from Mary Alice with an offer I couldn’t refuse. She said she wasn’t attached to it yet and if I really wanted the basket I could buy it. She even said she would ship it to me.

I was thrilled. The basket arrived and it now lives on my front door. It was meant to be. I needed a new door mat to go with my new basket so I picked this one up at TJMaxx.

It has a tiny bit of light blue which ties in my door.

I hit my urns with a fresh coat of black spray paint.

Two rusty-red mums finish it all off.

Of all the things I do around here to usher in the different seasons, fluffing my front door is my favorite. What is your favorite way to welcome a new season?

FYI:

Very nice Ann. Yes I must say I’m liking that basket. We have a storm door over our front door so I have always
gone with a wreathe. My grandson is over your way with his high school football team. Not sure of the exact school.
Oh well that’s a Nana for you. Never getting all the facts.
I’m on my way over to Andreas blog. Linda

Beautiful fall doorscape, Ann. I love your new basket, a real eye-catcher against your blue door.
I am enjoying these last few weeks of summer with my morning ritual of flying our flag, watering my large pot of beautiful pink geraniums, and waving to the neighbor’s children as they walk to their bus stop. I share a happy smile of retirement with you, my friend.
I voted for Andrea and became a new follower to her blog. I also saw Karianne is a finalist for her amazing Thistlewood blog.

What fun to spy something online and then have it delivered right to your front door – for your front door!

Beautiful porch – love that doormat!

I’m ready for fall – I think I’ll unpack my decorations tomorrow – thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Ann, Your front porch is so welcoming! Beautiful arrangement in the basket. I usher in the new season by decorating my front porch too. I also have a cupboard in the dining room that I decorate the top of – then it’s really the new season. Love you blog! Anne

  22. 22

Very pretty, Ann! I’ve been wanting to decorate for Fall but this humidity has kept me from starting. I’ll probably do my outside {front and garage door area} last, hoping cooler temps will come before I get any mums.

  23. 23

Ann…just love the front porch with your Fall decor….I am so in the mood now for Fall…need to take advantage of that soon as I start decorating for Christmas in mid October…takes me that long to decorate the entire house to be ready by December 1st…thanks for all the inspiration…the door basket is beautiful….so nice of Mary Alice to offer her basket to you!
And….just love, love Andrea’s blog and her home…she is doing such an amazing job on her farmhouse…it’s no wonder that Country Living chose her as one of their finalists!!

Absolutely gorgeous, Ann! Your front porch has always been one of my favorites! And, it truly looks stunning decked out for Fall! Love the wall basket … the sunflowers are gorgeous. I need to get some mums, too … just afraid that the harsh heat and direct sunlight we have in the front of our home will knock them out pretty quickly. Thanks for sharing!

I have the exact same basket! I bought it 8 years ago at the coolest shop outside Columbus, Ohio. There’s paint in its future (sadly) because it clashes with the paint of our new house. Wait. Maybe I should paint the house instead!

  40. 40
