Before I tell you my news, I want to thank all of you (again) for your support and encouragement as I have built my little business. It has enabled me to sew with the vintage linens I love and fills a creative need that I’ve had all my life. Sutton Place Designs began 2 1/2 years ago as a way to use up some of my fabric stash. I’ve fine-tuned it many times and right now I think it’s in the best place it’s ever been. After a great deal of thought and research, I decided to strike out on my own and leave the Etsy platform. It’s there as a safety net if I fall flat on my face…but I had to try this and see if I could do it.
I love Etsy and still highly recommend it for starting a home-based business. It’s user-friendly and I know there are elements that I will sorely miss. The bottom line is that I just wanted to see if I could do this on my own. I have a promotion strategy in place, which is the first time that has ever happened! I have a business plan in my head but so far I’m not ready to put it down on paper. I need just a bit more confidence for that.
I found the Big Cartel platform through my friend, Miss Mustard Seed. Even though Marian is much younger than me, she has been my inspiration and example from the beginning. I “met” her even before I opened my Etsy shop and she’s been supportive and encouraging ever since. She’s always one step ahead of me so when she opened her online shop I paid close attention. I have found that is one of the best ways to learn…by watching.
Most everything currently listed is one or two of a kind. That is the way I will be stocking the shop. I cannot take custom orders due to how time-consuming they are. I tried to keep up with them for a long time and finally had to accept defeat. When I did that it was as if a weight had been lifted. Sometimes you just have to know when to fold them.
As you can tell, I will be concentrating on vintage fabrics, antique grain sacks and 100% linen. Seasonal items will be limited but I hope to add them as often as time allows. I will try to keep you updated when I list new items. I won’t post every time, but will let you know on Facebook and Instagram.
