Casual clothes to celebrate fall in style. Fall capsule wardrobe ideas featuring comfortable tops, jeans, shoes, and a classic double-breasted coat.
I love this time of year. Summer is still here, but fall is around the corner. The mornings are cool and crisp, but the afternoons are hot and sunny. Now is the time to think ahead, and update your fall wardrobe. It’s the best feeling to wake up on that first chilly day, and have a fun new outfit waiting in the closet.
Walmart has definitely upped their style game in recent months. Everything I am featuring today is well-made, the fabrics are soft and natural, and the styles are classic, yet on-trend. I’m featuring 4 outfits today that all mix and match, plus a classic double-breasted trench coat that was just made for fall. I’m sharing as many details as possible, including all my sizes, so let’s go!

Jeans and Plaid
As someone who wears casual and modest clothing, these jeans and plaid shirt are perfect. The plaid shirt is soft, and I love that the back is longer than the front. In the image below, I’m wearing a medium, because I found that most of the Time and Tru items ran big. I normally wear a large in tops, and all the tops featured here are mediums.
And the jeans? For someone who had given up on finding jeans that fit, these mid rise jeans are a miracle! I originally ordered my normal size, which is a 12, and the fit was great. The only issue was the length, which was too long. I loved the stretchy fabric, and the way they fit at the waist, so I didn’t want to give up. I decided to order a petite, hoping that the length would be OK. I sized up, and reordered in a 14 petite. They are amazing! I seriously haven’t owned a pair of real jeans, with a zipper, for at least ten years. I feel really good in them, which at the end of the day, is the most important thing.
The little fleece jacket by Free Assembly is cozy, yet lightweight, and runs true to size. I originally ordered a medium, but exchanged it for a large, which is roomier and a little longer. The collar folds down neatly, and the pockets are big and functional. It’s also available in off-white with brown trim, and navy blue.
Cinnamon and Feminine
Besides the jeans, my favorite piece from this collection is the cinnamon blouse featured below. (Color on the website says orange brick, but it looks exactly like cinnamon!) I love the feminine gathers at the neck and wrists, and the little white buttons make it so easy to slip on and off. Wear it with jeans and mules for everyday, and pair it with dressy black pants for evening.
The handbag is roomy, and the wide handle is easy on the arm or shoulder. I went up a half size in the woven mules because of the pointed toe. They are easy to walk in, and the toe bed is wide enough so there’s no pinching!
A Monochromatic Look
Time and Tru named the delicious color of green featured in the pieces above “sea turtle,” and like the jeans, these utility pants fit like a dream. They are cropped, but because of my short legs, they are full length on me. (I’m wearing my normal size 12.) The fabric is stretchy, but heavy enough to hang nicely. They also come in blue denim, black denim, and a yummy color called chocolate fudge.
I love the slimming effect of a monochromatic outfit, so pairing the green pants with the green cardigan sweater worked beautifully for me. The ribbed sweater, in a medium, is light and comfortable.
Checks and Sneakers
For this outfit, the mid rise jeans are back, and I paired them with a super casual checked button-up hoodie in a size medium. The sneakers have a slight platform, are very cushy, and run true-to-size.
The short trench coat featured below is from Free Assembly, and it makes me stand taller, because that’s how good I feel in it. (I’m wearing a medium.) The dark khaki color is great for year-round wear, but it’s especially perfect for fall.
Belted Coat Tip
If you aren’t a fan of coats with belts, but love this cute find, you are in luck! I personally don’t like belts, but I loved this coat, and was able to make it work by removing the belt loops. They aren’t sewn into the side seams, so all you need is a seam ripper, or a tiny pair of scissors, and in about 5 minutes the belt loops can be removed.
Notes
- If you like something, and are considering placing an order, don’t wait! Items are selling out quickly.
- The brown handbag is currently sold out, but it’s available in beige and black. Check the link in a few days because chances are the brown will be restocked. I’ve seen that happen so many times recently. This handbag is a great alternative, and it’s available in cognac brown.
- The same goes for the double-breasted coat. Some sizes are sold out, but I’m confident they will be available soon. (This belted barn jacket is super cute, and this snap front shacket in sea turtle is the perfect fall accessory.)
- When I wrote this post a few days ago, everything featured here was in stock. I will keep an eye on the Walmart website, and let my email subscribers know when items become available. Not an email subscriber? Join me HERE.

This is a lovely wardrobe! The colors and silhouettes suit you so well. This was very fun to read, thanks for sharing!
Wow! You are an amazing woman! I love love love this! You wear it well, every single piece! This is single-handedly the most reasonable and beautifully styled capsule I have seen for me. I have looked at many of these capsules and love them but they aren’t for me. THIS IS IT! Perfection 😍! Now I gotta go find those mules stat! Thank you for curating such an inspiring and fun wardrobe!
I am in my 40th and I want to start building my capsule wardrobe this year. Where to start? Any recommendations? What color palette to choose? Thanks!
Hi Cloe! My best advice is to begin with the basics. Black pants, jeans you are comfortable in, a denim jacket, a white blouse, a black cardigan sweater. A blazer, if you like that look. Stick with black, gray, and white to begin…and then add color. If you like leggings, get black, and also find a basic black and white tunic top. These pieces will mix and match. From this capsule, you can expand into other things, and seasonal color. Have fun and good luck!
Love that denim purse! You look sooo cute in all the outfits! Weeding midrise out of my closet for high-rise ones. Thanks for the research. Checking those out. I found ones I loved at Target but not shopping Target currently, too liberal for me. Bring on the cool weather!
Does WM carry high rise jeans? Hate midrise and trying to weed all I have out and replace with high rise. Thanks
Hi Teresa…I did a quick search on the Walmart website. Time and Tru and Free Assembly both make high rise. Just search “women’s high rise jeans.” Thanks, Ann
Thanks for this great post, Ann. I ordered several of these items at 9:00 a.m. and they were delivered at 3:00 pm, without any type of Walmart membership. Can’t wait to try them on!
All of the outfits you styled and are modeling look fantastic on you. Perfect looks for fall, although it will be a while here in Virginia before I’ll transition to heavy fabrics. I will definitely check out some of the pieces, especially the jeans and the monochromatic outfit! Love it. Thanks for your efforts in searching out cute, but affordable looks! Love your blog!
I love all the clothing you chose. Here in Florida, those things are winter clothing. I’m glad that Walmart has upped their game. I recently became a Walmart plus member. I always enjoy your blog posts.
I love the Walmart plus program. It’s so nice to get groceries delivered when I’m pressed for time!
Great post today, Ann. Thank you!
Anxious to have a fall capsule wardrobe & will check out your choices. Do you ever find clothes in the store or do you always order on line ?
Walmart carries some brands in the store. They always have almost the whole line of Time and Tru. They carry quite a few shoes and handbags too. It’s fun to go and look!
Very cute choices! I especially love the fleece jacket and the turtle green sweater…we won’t hit this kind of sweater weather in TX until December/January! However, I’m going to look for these. Last year, I wanted a new pair of black jeans. I am big in the waist but have tiny legs and very short. I was willing to pay anything, anywhere…even considered paying $100 at Talbots (they didn’t have anything), but finally found some plus size skinny petit pairs at Walmart for $16!
Yay! Isn’t it the best feeling?
Love this post Ann, thank you! Definitely going to try a few of the pieces. And by the way, you look lovely in every picture.
I love your fall choices. I ordered a couple from your Walmart summer selections and will order from this group as well. Thank you for sharing.
Where did you purchase that blue rattan chair? So cute!
Good morning Ann,
Thanks for this great post. Your remarks about the clothing are super helpful. I love the fleece jacket and was on the fence about the size. Your comment helped me decide to order the large. I’m also a fan of the time and tru line, great fit, quality and price.

Typically I walk past the clothing section at Walmart. Not anymore! You have inspired me to take a look. Your selections are fabulous.
I like this fall collection at Walmart. I will most certainly look for the utility pants in chocolate fudge!
