In this post: Christmas Countdown Paper Chain Free Printable: prepare for Christmas day with this paper chain featuring the classic Christmas carol, Away in a Manger.
This Christmas countdown paper chain is the latest addition to the OSP Members Only Library. The library is a growing collection of printable wall art, banners, gift tags, ebooks, checklists and more. I believe that everyone should be able to decorate their home for the changing seasons…no matter what their budget. That’s why I offer free printables here on my blog. In addition to that, there is an exclusive, members only library that contains more printables that are not available to the general public. That’s where you’ll find this paper chain!
Paper Chain Printing Tips
- Print on a good quality paper or cardstock. I used kraft paper and love the vintage feel it gives the paper chain. It’s also a bit stiffer than regular copy paper so it rolled nicely into a circle.
- Use double-sided or poster tape to secure the circles.
- Use the music staffs as your cutting lines.
- Watch the placement of the numbers as you are assembling the chain. Make sure the numbers are all going in the same direction.
- There are three choices for the Christmas Day strip. Instead of rolling it, just connect the ends like in the last picture.

I have downloaded the file but when I print it, it doesn’t print full page. What am I doing wrong?
Hi! There should be a setting when you print that says “fit page” or “full page.” If you don’t see either of those, choose the 8 x 10 setting. I hope this helps!
Oh this is wonderful! I appreciate your printables so much 😊
Thank you Ann !
What do you use for the connecting links? Do you just cut strips of plain Kraft paper in the appropriate size or is there something else we are supposed to print besides the daily countdown links?
Hi JoEllen…all the numbered strips link together, one after another. In the image, only the odd numbered strips are showing because the even numbers are facing the other way. You don’t need any extra strips. Thank you!
Thanks, Ann – these are great! I would think they’d make easy cheap napkin rings, too!
Oh, this will be such a great, simple project for grandchildren. I love it; thank you so much!
I subscribe. I don’t see the password. Thanks.
Hi Teddee! The link and password to the library is at the bottom of every email I send. I am sending you an email with the information. Let me know if you don’t get it!
Love this idea! So many places this chain could be used. Thanks!
I LOVE this idea, thank you for always offering up such wonderful ideas and gifts. Your talent is amazing.
Ann, you have the BEST Blog ever!!! I look forward to seeing what you in store for us each day!Thank you so so much.
Love! Love! the paper chain. The only way I think it could be better is if you added a sheet like the numbered wreaths but blankwith no numbers inside them. That way you could extend the chain as long as you needed it to be. Thanks
Never mind. Sorry, I just saw that you used the brown kraft paper. Thanks.
Ann,
This is so beautiful! What color cardstock did you use????
Michelle
Your Christmas chain is SO pretty! I can’t put all of our decorations on our tree because we have a puppy that eats everything. He would definitely try to eat the hooks. This chain will be perfect. Thank you for such a wonderful blog with so many awesome ideas and the lovely free printables.
You are most welcome…and thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. Good luck with the puppy!
Hi Ann,
I’m a subscriber and long time lurker, but this is my first comment (I think) and had to say how beautiful this is. I’m looking forward to printing it out and adding a new link every day with my 2 year old daughter this Christmas season.
I would really love to see how you’ve styled it, I’m an Aussie and paper chains aren’t typical in Christmas styling here. My guess is to put it in our Christmas tree or over a doorway, but really have no idea.
Hi Laura! When I was growing up, my brothers and I made paper chains for everything. My mom always hung them on the bulletin board that was in our kitchen. You can really hang them anyplace. You actually make the whole paper chain and then tear off one link for each day…so by Christmas the chain is gone. As the chain gets shorter, Christmas gets closer. I hope this helps…thank you!
Two questions: 1) Is the white card stock listed as an option to the brown craft paper? 2) How did you display the chain? Did you use the twine on each end to make a loop for hanging? One comment: LOVE YOUR WEB PAGE AND POSTS!!! So enjoyable and inspirational. Thank you!!
Hi Susan! Yes…the white cardstock is an alternative to the kraft paper. The color you choose is just a matter of taste. You can actually use white copy paper too. You can use the twine on each end…or just the end with Christmas day. When I was growing up, my mom hung our paper chains on the bulletin board in our kitchen. I hope this helps and thank you!
Perfect! Thank you for the quick reply, and thank you for all your lovely posts. I thoroughly look forward to seeing “what’s new!” You are very talented and gifted. Blessings!
fabulous, and a great idea to share with grandkids-both to make it and to count down. LOVE the old fashioned look, warm and cozy, not glitzy and brittle.
Thank You so much Ann. God Bless You.
Oh, Ann! This is such a pretty paper chain! Thank you, so much, for sharing it with us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours ~ Donna L.
Thank you for the awesome chain! I did see that on the one I downloaded, there is only one choice for the last piece?
Hi Sondra…you are right. I have no idea what I did but the page with three last pieces didn’t make it in the PDF. I’ve fixed it now so you can reprint if you want to. Thank you so much for letting me know!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours 🦃
I love checking out your emails while I have my morning tea
Bless you for sharing your knowledge
With Thanks Linda
