See these cozy winter wardrobe finds that make it so easy to find something to wear. Mix and match the neutral pieces, and then add a pop of color!

Here in Ohio, we’ve had two days of sunshine, and even though I wish it would snow, I’m truly grateful! I’m not letting the lack of snow dampen my spirits, and I’m anxiously counting down the days until Christmas. Sometimes, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of holiday prep, we get lost in the shuffle. We are so busy taking care of everyone else, and all the details, that we tend to forget about ourselves.

*This post is a collaboration with Walmart, but as always, all selections, images, and ideas are my own. I hope you like it!

Today, with help from Walmart Fashion, I’m fixing that! I’ve picked out basic and comfortable pieces that mix and match, and that are neutral in color. Use these cozy choices to start a fashionable and budget-friendly winter capsule wardrobe. To spice up the outfits, I’ve added colorful sweaters or scarves to the mix. Everything is practical, classic, and so easy to wear. Walmart is the top gifting destination for stylish gifts, so keep that in mind as you take a look. Shopping on Walmart.com couldn’t be easier, so let’s celebrate more, and spend less!

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

Building a winter capsule wardrobe is all about selecting versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits while keeping you warm and comfortable. Here are some tips to help you create a functional and stylish winter capsule wardrobe:

  1. Start with the Basics:
    • Invest in basics like a warm coat, sweaters, tops, leggings, and jeans. Choose neutral colors for these foundational pieces to maximize versatility.
  2. Layering is Key:
    • Winter weather can be unpredictable, so focus on layering. This allows you to adjust your outfit based on the temperature. Consider items like cardigans, vests, and sweatshirts.
  3. Versatile Tops:
    • Select long-sleeved tops and blouses in different textures. These can be easily paired with various bottoms and outerwear.
  4. Bottoms:
    • Choose a mix of bottoms such as jeans, trousers, and leggings that can be dressed up or down. Make sure they are warm enough for cold weather.
  5. Outerwear:
    • Invest in a versatile coat that complements your style. A classic wool coat or a down jacket can be a good choice, depending on your climate.
  6. Accessories:
    • Hats, scarves, and gloves are not only functional, but also add a stylish touch to your winter outfits. Choose accessories in neutral tones or bold colors to add interest.
  7. Footwear:
    • Opt for weather-appropriate footwear, such as boots and sneakers. Make sure they are comfortable for walking in colder conditions.
  8. Statement Pieces:
    • Include a few statement pieces to add personality to your wardrobe. This could be a bold-colored coat, a unique sweater, stylish winter boots, or a lovely piece of jewelry.
  9. Consider Your Lifestyle:
    • Tailor your capsule wardrobe to your lifestyle. If you have a more formal work environment, include appropriate pieces. If you’re more casual, focus on comfortable and relaxed items.

My Favorite Outfit Ever

I am happiest, and the most comfortable, when I am in leggings and a sweatshirt. I enjoy dressing up to go out, but the minute I get home, I’m back in my cozy clothes. You cannot go wrong with these black leggings from Athletic Works. They are nice enough to wear out, but they are also perfect for being at home. The best of both worlds. The sneakers are no-tie, which makes them simple to slip on and off. (Sizes: XL in leggings, L in hoodie, LP in vest. The leggings run true-to-size, but I sized up because I like them a little loose.)

Dress It Up but Still Casual

For the past few years, I have been trying very hard to simplify my life, in any way possible. A mix and match wardrobe allows for less in my closet, less upkeep, and it’s so simple to find something to wear. I took my favorite jeans and a simple black t-shirt to the next level by adding a fun and flirty shawl, a string of pearls, and black mules. It’s still very comfy, but it’s appropriate for a lunch or dinner date.

To add your own signature style, simply replace the black shirt with something colorful, and add your own jewelry. Although still neutral, a crisp white blouse would look amazing! (Sizes: shawl is one size fits all, L in shirt, 14P in jeans.)

Adding Color

My goal for this post was to be completely authentic, and share with you what works for me on a daily basis. I feel very comfortable in black and gray, so that’s what I’m featuring. However, it’s a smart and savvy decision to choose a neutral capsule wardrobe, and then add color with a few carefully selected tops, scarves, and jewelry. It’s super easy to add a pop of color just by incorporating a colorful t-shirt or sweater.

Many of you have asked to see more of Millie on the blog, but it’s really hard to get her to hold still long enough to snap a picture! I was determined to make it work this time, and I was actually able to get a good shot. So Merry Christmas from both of us to you!

  3. I wish you and so many other bloggers would not highlight Walmart. They have terrible employment practices and have hurt so many communities. I see these posts all the time and finally wanted to vent. I enjoy and subscribe to your posts and will continue to do so even though I just skip over the Walmart information. Happy Holidays!

Love your style! How do you wear warm layers with shawls? I have tried layers underneath and layers over but the shawl just doesn’t work. I’m in Massachusetts so it is cold here.

Merry Christmas to you and Millie❤️

    1. Ann Drake says:

Do you mean outside? If it’s cold, a shawl definitely wouldn’t work as outerwear. I usually tuck the shawl around my shoulders, and wear a loose fitting coat. You can also put the shawl over your coat, and wear it as a scarf. Then when you take off your coat, just add the shawl to your shoulders. I hope this helps!

  7. I am loving all of your clothing picks.I also am more comfortable wearing black, gray and neutrals.

  13. I love your cozy clothing choices. It’s the way I dress, too.
Having a capsule wardrobe in a narrow range of colors in the basic pieces has made my life so much simpler since I employed it 5 years ago. It avoids shopping stress, and I spend less, too! I also add color in accessories and jewelry, as those pieces are less expensive and easier to change with the seasons or trends.
And pearls go with everything, don’t they?
