Decorating with Flowers Decorating with Natural Elements Garden How To Living Room Summer Decor Summer Flowers

Decorating With Hydrangeas

Decorating With HydrangeasI have waited a very long time to write this post on decorating with hydrangeas. Finally, after what seems like years of trying, I have abundant blooms. I almost hate to say that for fear of jinxing myself! Although there are still a few bushes that could use some improvement, most of them have come through.

Hydrangeas in Silver UrnsOf course the first place I thought about using them was in my living room. {Hope you aren’t tired of seeing this dresser!} I shined up my silver urns, soaked some Oasis, and made these arrangements.

Annabelle HydrangeasJust to show you how bizarre my luck with hydrangeas has been…I have two identical bushes by my shed. They are lovely Annabelles, my all time favorite.  One is full of blooms (where I got these) and the other one has just a couple of buds. These bushes were planted on the same day and got the exact same care. Totally baffles me.

Decorating With HydrangeasI’m not complaining though…it’s my “little bush that could” and I’m not giving up!

Decorating With HydrangeasI have Endless Summer bushes in the front of my house. I’m a bit worried about them because we had to remove a tree and now they are getting too much sun. Hopefully they will be fine if I keep them watered.  The blooms aren’t big but they are the prettiest color of pink.

Pink Hydrangeas in a Silver PitcherI used a silver pitcher here in my entry. It adds a little shine and I love the vintage look. All my silver is heirloom. I can’t remember ever actually buying any but I know it’s in thrift stores and antique places. Don’t be afraid to buy a piece that’s tarnished. It will clean up and shine like it’s brand new. I just tweaked my silver cleaning method and will be back tomorrow to share that.

Wishing everyone a beautiful day, wherever you are. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to stop by. There are no words to express how grateful I am for your friendship.

Congrats on the hydrangeas! I feel the same way about tomatoes. I try every year, but have yet to get more than a single tomato. Hopefully this will be my year, too!

I love the way you have displayed them, Ann. I really love hydrangeas and love them dried as well as fresh. I wish we could grow some of the blue and purplish ones here but no such luck. I do love the green ones-though-they always look so fresh. xo Diana

    Ann,
The blooms are lovely, especially in those silver urns. Certainly not tired of your beautiful dresser. The whole look is charming. You have a lovely home.

I absolutely love hydrangeas. We have one bush in the backyard that I bought years ago (at a supermarket) and it has gotten huge! We put in some Endless Summer last year. This year, one is blooming like crazy, and has gotten huge; the other is still puny. I think the silver vases give the hydrangeas a very fancy look! So pretty.

Hi Ann, Your hydrangeas are so beautiful, especially Annabelle. I have a Limelight hydrangea that isn’t blooming so that’s disappointing. I love hydrangeas but don’t find them easy to grow.

I love hydrangeas and decorating with them…they just add so much fill. Yours are beautiful. I also like to dry them at the end of the year to use through the winter. We will planting some of them when we get to that part of the landscaping in our yard work!

Your photo of your dresser, plates, urns and hydrangeas is gorgeous! I feel like I need to sit and study that and find a place in my house to replicate it! Beautiful! I love hydrangeas but haven’t had much luck with them. I do have an endless summer type, but it has no blooms yet! We’ve had a weird spring/summer this year so who knows. I had to make a screen ( wood supports and a window screen top) because mine was getting too much hot afternoon sun and the leaves were burning!

Gorgeous hydrangeas, Ann! And, they look stunning showcased in your beautiful silver urns! Your plate wall is amazing … it all makes for a “fantabulous” vignette that I, of course, had to pin. :)

I have never thought to put hydrangeas in silver, and of course they look stunning and timeless. I am struggling with mine this year too, some years the blooms are abundant and some years not so much. This year I have had exactly 2 Perfect blue blooms and am still waiting while my neighbors sag with blossoms :( One year they bloomed in October! A gardener I am not~But I will put them in silver next time I get some!

Ann, if only those hydrangea bushes knew how happy those blooms made you and the rest of us! I only have one bush which was planted by my late mother-in-law. No telling how long it’s been here, but it always produces the biggest dark purple blossoms I’ve ever seen. But now you have me wanting to plant Annabelles and Endless Summers! My favorite photo is the 2nd to the last one, so I’m pinning it!!!

I LOVE hydrangeas! Mine are looking wonderful – I have the new variety of Annabelles – the Incrediball.
I cut one yesterday to use with my Sweet Tea photoshoot. I hate to cut them too early or they don’t stay full and dry pretty. I love how they look in decor!

They are gorgeous – no I really should say GORGEOUS!!! You make me want to go out and buy a silver urn and start polishing. I planted a hydrangea bush last year and would love for it to come into bloom. I can’t decide which I like better the soft pink or the white – they both are so pretty.

Just beautiful! I love your creamy hydrangeas but those pink endless summer ones are just delicious looking. So pretty in the silver urns and pitcher too! I have a blue (or at least is was last year when I bought it) endless summer one but the bud are just forming this year. I hope it will be okay. I also have a huge tree that doesn’t bloom until later in summer and dries beautifully. I alway enjoy visiting your blog Ann. Hugs. Pam

We too had a lovely hydrangea that became exposed after we had to take down a tree that had provided lots of cool shade. The plant struggled the first season, but seem more acclimated the second season, so don’t give up hope.

:D I love hydrangeas, and mine are looking pretty good, too! I love the pink ones. I just put some white ones on my dining table. I think I might add some blue ones to them….the arrangement looks a little skimpy compared to yours!

Lovely post, Ann, and your silver urns are so pretty!

Congrats, and I hope you continue to have a bumper-crop of hydrangeas this summer!

Your hydrangeas are BEAUTIFUL! I love how you have them displayed around the house… in the summertime, I constantly have a jar of hydrangeas sitting somewhere. :-) Love the Annabelle variety… I planted two bushes last year that didn’t do well, so I transplanted them earlier this year and they are thriving now but no blooms this year. I’ll cross my fingers for next summer, especially after seeing your photos! :-) Anxious to read more about your silver cleaning method… my silverware is due for a cleaning. P.S. I could never get tired of your dresser!

Your vignettes are always beautiful, but the one on the little dresser outshines them all, I think. Your hydrangeas are all gorgeous, it’s my favourite flowering bush. I have two little tiny ones that will be large enough to produce blossoms by the time I’m in an old age home, I think. HAHA!

Your arrangements are beautiful. I was lucky to inherit several hydrangea bushes with this new home. Six of them were planted on our front hillside in full afternoon sun several years ago. They seem to be doing ok. The ones in the back that get more shade do better though.

So glad to hear that your hydrangeas are doing well finally! I know they are fickle. I have 3 hydrangea bushes in my back yard that are purple. They bloom every year, but not the way I would like. They seem skimpy compared to others I’ve seen where the whole bush is nothing but blooms and you can’t even see the green leaves. Nope! I’ve never had a bush like that. So I feel your pain. LOL! Yours are obviously blooming pretty good by the fact that you were able to cut off such big blossoms and bring them indoors! They look so pretty in their silver containers. I have fake white hydrangeas in my house at the moment. They never let me down. LOL!

I looove that dresser! Don’t apologize! (If you ever get tired of it, give me a jingle.)

I have an Annabelle Hydrangea in my front garden and it’s been a proficient bloomer for a good 20 years. It does have runners that come up around it each spring. I have dug them up and plopped them in other places and they take right off! Some of the blossoms are as big as my head!

Remember that you can dry the hydrangeas too for an all-year arrangement. Each end of summer, when they start to turn green, I pick an armful and just plop them into a vase (no water) and they will turn a lovely ivory/amber shade to last till the next crop.

Are the first ones you showed the Limelight kind? I have five endless summer bushes I put in last year and they are doing well this year, still small but 4 of the 5 are giving a ton of blooms ranging from dusky pink to purple. I’ve been thinking of putting in a limelight too though. Do you know if the care is the same?

  43. Michele/Finch Rest says

    Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 10:49 am

Ann, I could never get tired of seeing you fantastic dresser.

Funny you mention hydrangeas – must be our Ohio weather because MINE are doing the best they have in the 4 years I have had them. I have more blooms than ever, too.

Hope your front ones do ok – any chance you can put another tree where the other one stood? If it was too close can it just be planted further away but still shed some dappled light? Is that an option?

Have a wonderful day. Love your post, the arrangements are lovely.
