Summer decorating doesn’t have to mean starting over or filling every corner with something new. Sometimes the best seasonal changes are the quiet ones that make a room feel lighter, calmer, and easier to live in every day.

This year, I wanted my summer living room to have a little breathing room. I brought out a few favorite blue and white quilts, added soft pillow covers in faded blue and cream, and used vintage silver urns filled with faux hydrangeas and greenery on the mantel. The changes are simple, but together they make the whole space feel fresh and settled for the season ahead.

One of the things I love most is that nothing feels temporary or overdone. These are easy updates that can stay in place all summer long, right up until it’s time to decorate for fall. The room feels comfortable, uncluttered, and calm, which is exactly what I wanted.
Start by Giving the Room a Little Breathing Space

Before I added anything new for summer, I actually took a few things away. After the heaviness of winter and the fullness of spring, I wanted this room to feel open, light, and easy to maintain. That didn’t require a complete makeover or a shopping trip. I simply cleared a few surfaces, removed extra layers, and tried not to fill every corner. Even small changes like simplifying a coffee table or limiting accessories on side tables can completely change the feeling of a room.

I also focused on using pieces that already feel familiar and comfortable in this space. Instead of changing everything for the season, I brought out a few things I truly love and let them stand on their own. The result feels relaxed, settled, and much easier to enjoy day to day. If your home feels visually busy this time of year, giving a room a little breathing space can make a surprisingly big difference.
Use Light Textiles in Soft, Familiar Colors

One of the easiest ways to make a living room feel ready for summer is by changing the textiles. I brought out a few blue and white cotton quilts that have been favorites for years and added soft pillow covers in faded blue, cream, and white. The lighter fabrics instantly changed the mood of the room without making it feel overly seasonal. I love using colors and patterns that already work in my home because everything feels comfortable, familiar, and easy to live with long after summer begins.
Add Simple Arrangements That Last All Season

For the mantel, I used vintage silver urns that were passed down through my husband’s family and filled them with faux hydrangeas, greenery, and blueberry stems in soft shades of blue and white. The arrangements feel fresh and summery, but they also keep things very simple, which was important to me this year. I added a few small pitchers of faux flowers to the side tables so the color and softness carry throughout the room. I also took the time to clean the silver before decorating, which made these family pieces feel extra special for the season.
Keep the Coffee Table Easy and Uncluttered

I kept the coffee table very simple with a small stack of favorite books and a small white pitcher. Leaving plenty of open space was intentional because I didn’t want the room to feel crowded or overly styled. Simplicity is what gives this room its sense of calm, and it’s one of the reasons I know these summer touches will stay in place for months without needing to be changed or refreshed.

This summer living room isn’t complicated or filled with dramatic changes, but that’s exactly why it feels so comfortable to me. A few soft textiles, simple arrangements, and meaningful pieces were enough to make the whole room feel lighter for the season. Best of all, everything can stay in place right through the summer months, which makes caring for this space feel calm and manageable instead of like one more project to keep up with.
