WHAT IS APPLE CRUMBLE TOPPING MADE OF?

A fruit crumble has fruit on the bottom, covered by a streusel topping that does not contain oats. A crumble's main ingredients for the topping are flour, sugar, and butter.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN APPLE CRUMBLE AND AN APPLE CRISP?

The main difference between a fruit crumble and a fruit crisp is the topping. A crumble topping is made with flour, sugar, and butter, and traditionally does not include oats. It has a crumbly, slightly clumpy texture that’s often added to the fruit by crumbling it through your fingers. A crisp topping, on the other hand, includes oats, which give it a looser texture that turns golden brown and slightly crunchy as it bakes.

WHAT KIND OF APPLES SHOULD I USE?

The variety of apples you use is a personal choice, but for this recipe I recommend Gala apples. They bake beautifully without becoming mushy, which is important for a good texture. If you prefer a slightly different flavor, Honeycrisp or Braeburn are also excellent options. All three varieties offer a nice balance of tartness and sweetness, making them ideal for apple crumble.

SHOULD I PEEL THE APPLES?

Whether or not to peel the apples is completely up to you. I chose not to peel mine for this apple crumble, which saved a bit of time and added a touch of texture. If you or your family prefer a softer filling, you can certainly peel the apples before slicing. Either way works just fine.
