October is here, and I’m very happy to see it. Here in Ohio, the air is cooler, the trees are beginning to change, and the garden is winding down for the year. I always enjoy this slower shift into colder weather, when outdoor jobs begin to taper off and home starts to take center stage again. I’ve also been able to share quite a bit of new content lately, which has been both enjoyable and rewarding. This month will bring a mix of simple seasonal ideas, easy recipes, and a few things I’ve been looking forward to sharing. As always, I hope you find something here that fits your home, your schedule, and this time of year.

1.) A Little Determination

I spent this past weekend at Notre Dame with my husband, son, and two oldest grandchildren. My husband and son are both graduates, but this was the kids’ first football game. Friday and Saturday were full from beginning to end, with lots of walking, beautiful weather, and more than a few special moments along the way. Before the weekend began, I was nervous about whether I would be able to keep up. I knew there would be a lot of walking and long days, and I honestly wasn’t sure how I would do. By the end, I was very tired. There were even a few moments when I wondered if I could keep going.

But I did, and I made it. Looking back, I’m so glad I didn’t let the doubt talk me out of trying. I have all of those memories now, and that matters much more than how tired I was when I got home. I know determination isn’t enough in every situation, and sometimes slowing down or saying no is exactly the right choice. But every once in a while, believing you can do something helps you take the next step. And sometimes that next step is all you need.

3.) Gather & Savor: Maple Cinnamon Butter

This may be one of the simplest things I’ve featured for Gather & Savor, but it is also one of the best. Maple syrup and cinnamon turn a stick of softened butter into something that feels a little special, and it takes just a few minutes. For the best texture, the butter needs to be very soft, but not melted. Add 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon to 1/2 cup salted butter, then mix until everything is completely combined. Spoon the butter into a 4 oz. jar and keep it covered in the refrigerator.

Since refrigerated butter is difficult to spread, take out just what you need and let it sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. It softens quickly, especially in a small amount. It would be wonderful on toast, English muffins, biscuits, crackers, muffins, pancakes, waffles, French toast, cornbread, or warm dinner rolls. I also think it would be especially good on a baked sweet potato or stirred into a bowl of hot oatmeal. It is such an easy way to make an ordinary breakfast or afternoon snack feel a bit more seasonal.

4.) Worth Knowing

If you use Google to look for recipes, you may have noticed the AI Overview that sometimes appears at the top of the page. It can be helpful for a quick answer, but when you’re looking for a recipe you actually plan to make, I recommend scrolling a little farther and visiting a real recipe website. AI summaries can pull information from several sources, so what you see isn’t necessarily one recipe that has been prepared and tested exactly as written. Choosing a recipe from a site you trust gives you the complete instructions, helpful notes, and the experience of the person who actually made it. AI can be very useful, but for something you’re going to spend your time and money making, an original source is still worth a click.
