How Do You Keep Drawer Organization Simple?

Keeping kitchen drawers organized is easiest when you use simple, no-install solutions that fit your daily routine. Start by grouping similar items together, then use organizers or dividers to give everything a designated space. Focus on the drawers you use most often, and avoid overfilling so items stay easy to see and reach. Simple systems like a flatware tray, drawer dividers, and neatly folded towels make it easy to maintain order without extra effort.

Start With the Drawers You Use Most

The easiest way to organize kitchen drawers is to begin with the ones you use every day. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, focus on the drawers that affect your daily routine. These are usually the spaces that hold flatware, utensils, storage bags, and food containers. Starting small makes the process feel manageable, and it also gives you quick results. When one drawer is organized and working well, it naturally makes you want to move on to the next.

Even though every kitchen is different, most of us are organizing the same basic items. Flatware, plastic bags, storage containers, and everyday tools all need a place to land. When those items are easy to find and easy to put away, your kitchen begins to function better without much effort. You don’t need a perfect system to get started. Just choose one drawer, give everything a place, and build from there.

Simple Flatware Organization That Stays in Place

One of the easiest ways to bring order to a kitchen drawer is with a flatware organizer. It’s a simple solution, but it makes a noticeable difference right away. I use an adjustable bamboo organizer that expands to fit the width of the drawer, so it works in different kitchens and can easily move with you if needed. Once it’s in place, each type of flatware has its own section, and the compartments keep everything from shifting around, even with daily use. I also keep only what I use most often in this drawer, which helps prevent clutter and keeps the space easy to maintain. It’s a quick change that makes your kitchen feel more organized every single day.

Use Drawer Dividers to Create Sections

Drawer dividers are one of the most useful tools for keeping kitchen drawers organized. They make it easy to create sections within a drawer so everything has a place, even items that don’t naturally fit together. I use simple wood dividers that adjust to fit the drawer and install in just a few seconds. There’s no measuring or hardware involved, which makes them easy to move or rearrange if needed.

They work especially well for organizing storage containers and lids, keeping items upright and separated so you can see exactly what you have without pulling everything out. I also use them for smaller baking items and utensils that don’t belong in the flatware drawer. Measuring cups, small tools, and miscellaneous items stay contained and easy to reach. What I like most is how flexible they are. You can change the layout as your needs change, and they work in almost any drawer.

Why a Spice Drawer Makes Cooking Easier

One of the most functional changes I’ve made in my kitchen is using a drawer for spices instead of a cabinet. Being able to see everything at a glance makes cooking easier, and I no longer have to search through shelves to find what I need. I keep the labels facing up so each jar is easy to read, and the entire drawer stays neat with very little effort. If you’d like to see exactly how I set it up, along with the organizers I use, you can visit my full post on organizing a spice drawer.

How to Fold Kitchen Towels for Easy Storage

Kitchen towels can quickly become messy in a drawer if they aren’t folded in a consistent way. I keep mine organized by folding them so they fit neatly into one side of a divided drawer. Each towel is folded lengthwise, then into smaller sections until it forms a compact rectangle. This allows the towels to stand in two tidy rows, making it easy to see what’s there and grab one without disturbing the rest. Because they are all the same size when folded, the drawer stays neat with very little effort. It’s a simple system, but it makes a big difference in how the space functions day to day. The exact folds don’t matter as much as keeping the size consistent so everything fits neatly in the space.

Keep Kitchen Drawer Organization Simple

It’s easy to think that organizing kitchen drawers requires a lot of time, planning, or special products, but that really isn’t the case. The systems that work best are usually the simplest ones. A basic flatware organizer, a few adjustable dividers, and a consistent way to fold or store everyday items can completely change how your drawers function. When everything has a place, it’s easier to keep things neat without having to constantly straighten or rearrange. It’s also important to choose solutions that fit your life. What works in one kitchen may not work in another, and that’s perfectly fine. The goal isn’t to create something perfect. It’s to make your kitchen easier to use every day.

Organizing kitchen drawers doesn’t have to be a big project. Starting with just one drawer and using simple, flexible solutions can make a noticeable difference right away. Over time, those small changes add up and help create a kitchen that feels more manageable and easier to maintain.

  1. I followed your suggestions that you have posted in years past about using clear organizers and adjustable dividers when we revamped our kitchen a couple of years ago and it has stayed organized with almost no effort. It has made daily cooking easy instead of a chore. The hubs does a lot of cooking, too, and he doesn’t even mind cleanup! During holidays when family is helping with last minute prep or cleanup, each has commented on how nice it is to just slide open a drawer and find things. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and sources!

  2. I noticed you have mostly drawers in your kitchen. I am planning a remodel and was wondering if the end cabinet has pull out drawers. Thank you and I love your ideas and your blog.

    1. Hi Tina…no, the end cabinet has shelves. I can’t tell you how much I wish it had drawers! My pots and pans are in there, and I have them on risers, so they are easy to get in and out. But if I could change it, I would definitely have drawers. Not too long ago I saw a kitchen on Pinterest that was all drawers on the bottom. It looked wonderful.

  3. Ann, Your Kitchen drawers are a work of Art. Oh to have so many drawers in your Kitchen… Lucky Lady! I have only 1 drawer that slides out and that is where I put my Silverware. The bottom drawer is one of those that I made sure the drawers are able to slide out. Wonderful feature. I have a Lazy Susan which I love that stores all my can goods. All the other cabinets are Upper Cabinets. Im pretty organized because I have to be.

    1. This is SO timely ~ I am MOVING next month !!! I feel as if someone should throw me a NEW home shower !! I was just about to google.. what to put in a corner lazy susan?? Someone said cans of food.. but not sure that will work??

      1. I used my lazy Susan to store my saucepans and ditch oven and cuisinart. Love it for this

  4. Hi Ann – thankyou for this post. Seeing how things are organised visually is so helpful.
