Late August and early September have always felt like an in-between time to me. Summer is still very much here, but little signs of autumn begin to appear. There is no need to rush any of it. Start with one or two small things when you are ready, and let the rest happen naturally. Simple living in autumn can be as much about slowing down and making room as it is about adding anything new.

Bring Nature Indoors

One of the easiest ways to mark the changing season is to bring something natural inside. Clip branches from the yard, gather a few hydrangeas, fill a bowl with apples or pears, or place small pumpkins on a table when they begin to appear at the market. These simple additions are inexpensive, easy to change, and often make more of an impact than adding several new accessories.
Create Simple Kitchen Rituals

The kitchen naturally changes as fall approaches. This might mean making soup for dinner, baking a favorite loaf of bread, keeping apples on hand for an easy snack, or making a warm drink in the evening. There is no need to fill the calendar with seasonal recipes. Choose a few things you truly enjoy making and return to them throughout the season. Familiar recipes and simple routines can make everyday meals feel special without adding much work.
Rethink Your Calendar

Fall can become surprisingly busy, especially once September arrives and the holidays begin to feel closer. Before filling the calendar, take a look at what is already there. Leave some open space when you can, and be willing to say no to things that feel like more work than enjoyment. A quieter schedule makes room for ordinary days at home, spontaneous plans, and the things you actually want to do.
Start a Gentle Evening Routine

As daylight begins to fade earlier, evenings naturally take on a different rhythm. This can be a good time to create a simple routine that helps the day wind down. Turn on a few lights, make a cup of tea, read for a while, work on a puzzle, or watch a favorite program without trying to accomplish anything else at the same time. An evening ritual does not need to be productive or carefully planned. The point is simply to have something familiar to look forward to at the end of the day. Even fifteen or twenty quiet minutes can make an ordinary evening feel more settled.
Practice Gratitude

Gratitude does not have to involve a journal or a formal daily practice unless that appeals to you. Sometimes it is simply noticing what went well that day. A phone call from someone you love, dinner that turned out especially well, flowers still blooming outside, or a quiet afternoon can be enough. Paying attention to these small things is one of the simplest ways to appreciate the season.
Simplify Seasonal Decorating

Use what you already own before buying anything new. Repeat a simple color palette, bring in natural elements, and add only enough to make your home feel ready for the season. There is no rule that says every room, table, or shelf needs a fall touch. When you feel finished, stop. You can always add something later if you want to.

Simple living in autumn does not mean doing everything or getting it all just right. Most of the time, I try to look at the glass as half full, but every now and then, it truly looks half empty. The change of seasons has a way of shifting that for me. Autumn feels like a fresh start, and it becomes a little easier to notice the ordinary things that make me happy and to be content with what is already here.

Dearest Ann: While this is the first time I am posting a comment on your site, I have been a long-time follower of your creativeness and artwork! With that said, I am most grateful that you remind us to enjoy the time we have now – not what we should do, or should purchase, or elevate the stress in our lives! Thank you for “allowing” us to pause and be satisfied with the present! May you continue to inspire each of us with your wisdom and graciousness!
