Simple fall decor ideas for the living featuring fresh flowers, velvet pumpkins, and a pillow with a pop of color.
Decorating for the seasons is one of my favorite things to do…but I like to keep things simple and quick. Transitioning your decor from summer to fall is easy if you add just a few touches that can be accomplished in hardly any time at all. Today I’m joining my best blogging friends for a fall one room tour. We’re all sharing one room in our homes that’s decorated for fall, so make sure to check out all the links at the end of this post.
Simple Fall Decor Ideas
Add Pumpkins
Decorating with pumpkins is one of the easiest ways to bring a touch of autumn warmth into any room. Sprinkling different sizes of pumpkins here and there around your space adds just the right amount of texture and interest. This year I used faux pumpkins in neutral tones. Some are velvet, and some are made from drop cloth. When it comes to deciding the color of your pumpkins, there are so many choices these days, so simply choose what you love. If you decide to decorate with real pumpkins, your color options go way beyond orange! Real pumpkins are available in a variety of colors and sizes. To make them last longer, follow the easy preserving directions at the link below.
The Colors of the Season
When I think of fall colors, an array of earth tones comes to mind. Copper, orange, gold, russet, dark green, and brown. Adding these colors of the season to your décor is easy if you stick to small items like pillows and throw blankets. Be true to your personal style, but switch up the colors, and add autumnal shades. An easy tip to help the budget is to purchase pillow covers to fit inserts you already have.
Use Fresh or Dried Flowers
Every fall, I look forward to the day when I walk into the grocery store and spy sunflowers in the flower section. As you know, fresh flowers are one of the small things I treat myself to on a regular basis. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to brighten your day, and add a natural element to your decor at the same time.
An easy way to take a simple bouquet of flowers up a notch is to arrange them with fresh seeded eucalyptus. It’s available at places like Trader Joe’s, and in grocery/discount store floral departments. For the arrangement above, I placed the eucalyptus in the pitcher first, and then nestled in the sunflowers and gerbera daisies.
Seeded eucalyptus makes flower arranging very easy because it holds the stems in place. It adds a lovely flow to any arrangement. Make sure to leave a few branches longer so they drape naturally over the rim of your vessel.

You may have noticed that I changed the chairs in our living room. The small navy slipper chairs worked well for several years, but recently, they weren’t functioning for our family at all. We needed larger, more comfortable chairs for when the whole family gathered together. Because of the COVID restrictions, I shopped online. I normally like to sit in a chair before I buy it, but I read the reviews, and they were very good. I took a chance, and am so happy with the way these chairs look…and they are very comfortable.
So that’s it for our simple fall living room decor. Just a few touches of fall color are all you need to greet the season. I just picked up some real pumpkins and gourds that I’ll be using in a centerpiece for our dining room. I’ll be sharing that for the October edition of 20 Minute Decorating…so stay tuned!

Best post ever!
I was curious about the rug in the room. Do you have a source for that? Love the whole room!
Here is the link to the rug: https://rstyle.me/+Yw1t6tULHYQU6zUTPEK9UQ. I also added it to the post…thanks for asking!
Is the basket filled with velvet pumpkins on top of the round coffee one of the set of three baskets from Amazon? I love that arrangement. Enjoy all your great ideas.
Yes! That set of baskets is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made!
You are the only blogger I follow! I love the fact that you work around things you already have. Can you tell me what size pillow insert you got for the Pumpkin Patch pillow cover and where you purchased it? Thank you!
Ann, I love all the “fall” touches you have added to your living room! As usual, you have done a lovely job with your decor. Your new chairs are beautiful! Have a great week!
I made your potato soup recipe last week and it was the best I’ve ever had!! My husband loved it too! It was awesome a couple days later too. The leek makes this soup amazing!! We will definitely be making this again- especially for the fall and winter months. Thank you so much!!!
Do you have a source for the pumpkin in the last picture in this post with the star cutouts?
Hello…no, I’m sorry! I bought that many years ago at a local shop. I have never seen another one like it. I wish I could be more help!
So very pretty!
Love love love those chairs. They look great as does your whole room……as usual. I look forward to each and every post.
You have the most wonderful taste, Ann-simple, understated, and elegant-but so festive, too. I am endlessly inspired by you, and look forward to every post!
Hi Ann, I love your style. Can you tell me what color your living room walls are? I want to repaint and feel overwhelmed with all the whites. Thank you
Hi Helen…here is the information on my paint colors. https://www.onsuttonplace.com/on-sutton-place-paint-colors/ I use a custom mix from Sherwin Williams which I share in the post. It’s very close to (literally matches) SW Alabaster or SW Snowbound if you don’t want to go the custom route. It’s not a true white…it’s ivory.
Ann, your living room looks lovely for the fall! Love the pops of color, and those chairs sure do make your room even lighter and brighter! Love the bowl of velvet pumpkins, too! Pinned!
Love the pops of color against the neutrals also love your new wing chairs.
