1.) The Thoughtful Holiday Guide

This weekโ€™s focus is on setting a holiday budget…and yes, even though itโ€™s early, itโ€™s one of the most important things you can do to keep the season calm and joyful. Start by making a simple plan for the big categories: gifts, food, dรฉcor, and any travel expenses. Decide ahead of time how much youโ€™d like to spend on your children, grandchildren, friends, and spouse. If youโ€™re comfortable, let your family know your limits so expectations are clear from the start.

Of course, no one can plan for every little thing this far out, so think of your budget as a flexible guide rather than a fixed rule. Adjust along the way if needed, but use it as a foundation to stay mindful and avoid surprises. And if youโ€™re like me, you already know which part of the holidays tempts you the most. For me, itโ€™s always Christmas dรฉcor. I tell myself to use what I have, but somehow new things still make their way home. Having a budget helps me stay balanced, and gives me room to splurge just a little on the parts of Christmas I love most. (See last year’s Christmas living room HERE.)

When you read this quote, read it twice, three times if you need to.

โ€œThe Law of Invisible Progress: You will see the reward for todayโ€™s effort in a season you have not yet reached. Beneath the surface your actions are stacking up quietly, relentlessly, invisibly. Most people quit in this phase because they mistake lack of visible results for lack of progress. The ones who win are the ones who understand this law and keep showing up long enough for the invisible to become the undeniable.โ€
โ€” Jude Fredman

I know these words to be true, but Iโ€™ve never heard them expressed so beautifully. They remind me of the idea of unanswered prayers…how sometimes what feels like silence or delay is actually grace at work. The hardest part of life, at least in my experience, is learning to wait patiently while Godโ€™s plan unfolds. Progress often happens quietly, beneath the surface. So even when we canโ€™t see it, we have to trust that our efforts are building toward something good. Something weโ€™ll recognize when the time is right.

3.) POlished, Not Perfect

Since I shared a few details about my morning ritual, Iโ€™ve had a few questions about my makeup routine. I thought Iโ€™d share the simple steps I follow each morning when I’m planning to go out that day. If I’m not, no makeup is required! Itโ€™s quick, easy, and helps me feel pulled together without a lot of fuss. Nothing fancy…just a few products that work well and make me feel like my best self. To see everything for yourself, visit this special section of my Amazon shop.

  • Tinted Moisturizer: I start with a lightweight tinted moisturizer. It goes on easily and gives my skin just enough coverage and glow. (Mine is Fair Neutral)
  • Eyebrows: My least favorite feature, but I do the best I can with what I have to work with. I use a two-tone brow powder with a flat brush. Itโ€™s not perfect, but itโ€™s a huge improvement over bare brows. (I wear Mocha Brown.)
  • Eyes: I donโ€™t wear eye makeup anymore and honestly donโ€™t miss it one bit.
  • Cheeks + Lips: I use a creamy twist-up stick for both blush and lipstick, blending it on my cheeks with a kabuki brush. To finish, I dust on a bit of powder with a soft, fluffy brush to pull everything together. (Blush: At Last, Powder: Porcelaine D’Ivoire Neutral.)
  • Finishing Touch: A light mist of matte setting spray keeps everything in place. I blot it gently with a sponge, and thatโ€™s it. Done in just a few minutes.

4.) Gather + Savor

The scent of this Sweet Fall Chex Mix baking in the oven instantly fills the whole house with that unmistakable โ€œfall is hereโ€ feeling. Itโ€™s simple to make, irresistibly crunchy, and just the right amount of sweet. I love packaging it in mason jars with a pretty tag because it makes the cutest little โ€œgift-in-a-jarโ€ for neighbors or friends. Itโ€™s one of those easy, cozy recipes that feels special even though it takes hardly any effort.

5.) THINGS WORTH MENTIONING

  • What’s ahead on Sunday: I’ll be sending out the November digital calendars, along with a look back at everything featured on the blog in October. (Honestly, I can’t believe we’re actually heading into November.)
  • What you might have missed: Last week on A Sunday Well Spent, I shared the minimalist kitchen essentials that I cannot live without. They are basic, easy to store, and simple to use. This Time of Year featured my homemade granola.
  • Quick follow-up: I know you love all the printables I share here, but I also know sometimes it’s frustrating when you can’t find what you’re looking for. The easiest thing to do is go to my printables directory. There are two ways to find it:
    • First, at the bottom of every email I send, there’s a little link to the directory page. It’s just a sentence that says “Access the OSP Printables Directory HERE.”
    • Second, in my menu, there’s a link that says “PRINTABLES.” On desktop, it’s very visible at the top of every page. On mobile, just click the three little lines at the top of the page so the menu will drop down. The PRINTABLES link is towards the bottom of the menu. I hope this helps!
    • Once you’ve found the page, bookmark it so you always have it at your fingertips!
  • I can hardly believe this, but the viral Norfolk pine garland is the lowest price I have ever seen. Right now it’s $32.99. I have no idea how long this price will last, so if you want it, get it now!
  • I just got an email that J.Jill is running a Friends + Family event. They are offering 30% off your entire purchase. If you’ve been eyeing something, or are ready to start Christmas shopping, now is the time to order.
  • I hope youโ€™re finding little ways to enjoy this beautiful season…a quiet morning, something delicious baking in the oven, or simply a few moments of calm. Whatever your week holds, make it a good one.

Love your no-makeup days….it gives the skin a break and there’s nothing wrong with a fresh look! The most important thing to wear every day is sunscreen–I am willing to spend on a high-end one that is moisturizing and looks good on the skin, too.

Thank you for all you do, Ann. I always look forward to your useful and inspirational thoughts.

  2. I wear very little makeup but put it on everyday because I want to look my best for my husband. Iโ€™ve never understood why people want to look their best for strangers but not for their family who they love.

  3. Ann, your post today was just what I needed! Going through a rough time right now & it felt like a little hug. Thank you. ๐Ÿงก

  4. I’m with you on the makeup thoughts. Only, I do use mascara or I look kind of blank. Love the new format! Have a wonderful day๐Ÿ˜
