Another Christmas season is upon us. This year has been a challenge, in more ways than one. I’m looking forward to the holidays, but for the first time in forever, we won’t be celebrating at home. Some of you may remember that my dad passed away in June. He was the reason we always stayed in town, and we were happy to do it. But now, there’s nothing keeping us from celebrating someplace else…so when our daughter offered to host, we gladly agreed.

This got me thinking about decorating, especially the Christmas tree. Since we won’t be home this year, I decided to skip the tree altogether. Instead, I focused on other areas of our home, pouring my creativity into spaces that still bring the holiday spirit. I had so much fun decorating the porch, and today I’m excited to share our living area…completely tree-free!

Tree-Free Advantages

Decorating for Christmas without a tree definitely has its perks, but I know it’s not for everyone. It’s perfect for small spaces, saving valuable room while still making your home feel festive. It’s also more budget-friendly, as you can use items you already have, like garlands, ornaments, or candles, in creative ways. Plus, it’s low-maintenance. There are no pine needles to clean up, or a large tree to set up and take down. Decorating without a tree gives you the freedom to try new ideas and create a look that perfectly suits your style and space.

Faux or Real Pine

Incorporating faux or real pine is a wonderful way to bring the essence of Christmas into your home, even without a tree. Drape garlands of pine across mantels, stair railings, or shelves to add greenery and texture. You can also use sprigs of pine in vases or tuck them into centerpieces for a fresh touch. The best part? Faux pine lasts for years, while real pine fills your space with that unmistakable holiday scent.

Lights

Twinkling lights instantly create a magical holiday atmosphere. A great alternative to a big tree is a tabletop tree. A small tree can pack a big punch after it’s decorated with love and care. You can also string lights along your windows, around door frames, or across a garland to brighten your home. For a unique look, place fairy lights in jars or lanterns to create glowing accents throughout your space. Whether you opt for classic white or colorful lights, they’ll add warmth and sparkle to your decor.

Pops of Red

Red is the quintessential Christmas color, and adding pops of it throughout your home is a simple yet effective way to embrace the season. Incorporate red accents with ribbons, table runners, or wall art. Small details, like red berries in wreaths or red ornaments displayed in bowls, can make your decor feel cohesive.

Festive Pillows + Throw Blankets

Cozy up your living spaces with pillows and throw blankets in holiday patterns or colors. Plaid designs, snowflakes, and other winter-inspired motifs are perfect for creating a warm and inviting place to hang out. Swap out your everyday pillows for holiday-themed ones, and drape throws over chairs or sofas for an instant Christmas vibe.

Candles

There’s nothing like the scent of fresh pine during the holidays. Sprinkle scented candles around your home to create a cozy atmosphere. Place one near your tree or in a central space to create a natural ambiance without the needles to clean up. It’s an easy way to enjoy the magic of the season while keeping things low-maintenance.

Bowls or Baskets of Ornaments

Ornaments aren’t just for trees—they can be stunning decorative elements on their own. Fill bowls, baskets, or trays with ornaments in a mix of colors and textures for a simple yet beautiful display. This is a great way to showcase sentimental ornaments or create a color-coordinated focal point in your holiday decor. Place these ornament-filled containers on coffee tables, shelves, a blanket ladder, or as a centerpiece on your dining table to add charm without the need for a tree.

Pinecones

Pinecones are a versatile and natural element that can add rustic warmth to your Christmas decorations. Scatter them across your mantel, use them to fill bowls or baskets, or incorporate them into wreaths and garlands. For a touch of sparkle, paint the tips with gold or silver or dust them with faux snow. Pinecones are simple, timeless, and a perfect addition to your holiday decor!

  1. Ann,
I am very sorry about your dad. I understand completely because I have lost most of my family and it always is October, November, or December. If we get through those three months every year I am grateful. Holidays are a little sadder now because I miss all of them. I try to concentrate on the ones still here but sometimes it is hard. I do believe all our loved ones visit us and spend the holidays celebrating with us.
    Merry Christmas
    Karen

  2. Hi Ann, Thanks for validating my decision to not put up a tree this year. We have very little family and I have no grandkids yet. I’m having knee replacement right after the holidays so I gave myself permission to not put up the tree, although I‘ve done it every year since I’ve been married. It was a hard decision but I feel less stressed already. I hope you have a wonderful and peaceful holiday with your daughter and her family!

  3. I love looking through your feed. Your home is the perfect blend of old/new and rustic/traditional. The type of home I would love to sit and have coffee with with a friend. Merry Christmas!
