As the weather cools down and the leaves start to change, it’s the perfect time to make your home feel warm and inviting. Fall is all about cozy moments, and with the right decor, you can create a space that welcomes the season with open arms.

Goals
My goals for adding touches of autumn to our home were very simple. First, I wanted something completely different than what I came up with last year. Second, I wanted to add a little bit of dark red, along with warm gold and green. My fall decor plan can be summed up with three words: comfortable, calm, and subtle. Decor can be all three of these things, yet still be festive and colorful.
The Cozy Factor
To welcome fall into your home, use decor that brings comfort and peace. Think about adding soft blankets, cozy pillows, and fresh flowers. Choose items that make you feel at ease, and remind you of the season.
I used one of my favorite accessories to make the flower arrangement on the coffee table. Years ago, I was in our local Goodwill and found this soup tureen for $3.00. Needless to say, it came home with me. I used regular Scotch tape to make a grid on the top of the tureen, and then just slowly filled it with greenery and flowers. I also added some fresh herbs from my garden. I know it won’t last, but for now, it makes me happy. When the flowers fade, I’ll fill it with some faux stems that I have in my stash.
Incorporate Sentimental Pieces
Personal keepsakes can make your fall decorations extra special. Use items that have sentimental value, like family heirlooms, photos, or handmade crafts. After my dad passed away, my brothers and I began the process of emptying his home. The bean pot pictured above sat on their kitchen counter for as long as I can remember. It means the world to me, and I knew I could use it in my own decor. Special touches like this make your home a true reflection of your personal style, and they fill it with memories.

Add That Personal Touch
A fall crafting session is just what you need to get your creative juices flowing. Handmade items can save you money, but even if they don’t, they are totally worth the time and effort it takes to make them. That time allows you to relax, and focus on something you enjoy. Crafting can be a calming escape from your everyday life, and give you a chance to recharge. Adding something you made yourself is just one more way to make your fall decor truly reflect your own style.
Choose Colors That Feel Like Fall
The colors you choose completely set the mood for your fall decor. Opt for warm, earthy tones like russet, red, gold, and brown. Or, if you love neutrals, stick with khaki, warm ivory, and soft white.
These colors are pulled from nature, and help to create a space that feels like fall. This year, I decided to forego adding any orange pumpkins. As soon as the real pumpkins begin to appear at our farmstands, I’ll add some little white ones. Until then, the only pumpkin in the space is one of the mod podge faux pumpkins I made last year.
Layer Textures and Fabrics for a Heartfelt Fall Look
Mixing different textures and fabrics can make your fall decor actually feel like a warm hug. Combine materials like wood and metal. Layer throw blankets on top of each other, and add pillows to your furniture. Pile blankets in a large basket. By blending all of these textures, you will add warmth and depth to your decor.

Matching Tables…or Not?
I know that matching tables are never a designer’s first choice. I crave symmetry, and matching tables help provide that to our open concept living room, so they have always worked for me. I loved my tables when I purchased them 7 years ago, and I still like them.
However, I don’t love them anymore. I would like to switch things up, and perhaps get an upholstered ottoman to use as a coffee table. The ones I have found so far are pricey, so I’m going to take it slow. When I allow myself time to think about things, and don’t rush, I’m less apt to make a mistake. I’ll let you know if I find something!
As you decorate for fall, remember that the most important thing is creating a space where your family can relax and feel truly comfortable. Let your decor reflect the warmth of the season by adding personal touches. My burning question is how do you keep the arm rests of yr chairs so clean all the time? My hubby’s chair is a light fabric , no arm covers. I do clean them with a cleaning machine but they keep on getting soiled. My hubby is a clean person but I guess the oils from his arms just make the chair arms soiled.I tried to see if I could make some arm covers but can’t seem to find fabric that will go with the chair. 🤔Any suggestions will greatly appreciated.

Hi Lorri…I really don’t do anything special. We don’t spend a lot of time in our living room, so the furniture is not used on a regular basis. The arms on our recliners are beginning to show some wear, but they don’t look too bad yet. Wish I could be more helpful! I think that professional cleaning helps. I do that once a year.
I enjoy reading your blog. Your blog gives me inspiration for decorating. I am not very good at deciding what looks right in color and placement. Do you have a source for pear pillow covers? They are beautiful and perfect for fall.
