April brings with it a quiet sense of possibility. It’s the time to tend to the things that have been waiting all winter. Hydrangeas need feeding, porches are ready for a simple refresh, and container gardens can finally be planned with intention. Walks that felt rushed in the cold can stretch a little longer now, with more light at the end of the day. The air feels softer, the trees are beginning to bud, and even the sunsets seem clearer. There is a natural shift this month, a gentle reminder that starting fresh doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as stepping outside, making a small plan, and beginning again.

1.) A Simpler Way
I came across a simple crescent roll idea that I had to try, and it turned out even better than I expected. Instead of unrolling the dough, you place two tubes side by side in a parchment-lined loaf pan, brush the top with melted butter, and bake at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes. When the loaf comes out of the oven, brush it again with butter and let it cool slightly before slicing. Pillsbury shared a video of the process, which is helpful if you’d like to see how it comes together.

What you get is a soft, pull-apart loaf that feels much more like homemade bread than you would expect. It’s easy, reliable, and one of those small shortcuts that makes a meal feel just a little more special.

This is a very short quote, but for me, it carries a lot of weight. Especially on the days when I don’t feel good enough, or when I question whether I’m on the right path. It’s in those moments that I remind myself to stay steady, focus on what’s right in front of me, and trust that each step forward still counts.

3.) Garden Notes
Peonies are one of those flowers that never disappoint. If you have them in your garden, now is the time to start paying attention so you get the most blooms possible. I put together a guide that covers everything I’ve learned over the years, including how to encourage fuller plants, what to do about ants, and a few simple ways to help keep the stems from flopping.

I made a batch of lemon scones recently, and they reminded me why I’ve loved this recipe for so long. They’re tender and lightly sweet, with just a hint of warmth from the addition of ginger…a little different, but in the best way. If you enjoy something simple and not overly sugary, this is a lovely treat to have with a cup of tea or coffee.

- What You Might Have Missed: not much! I took some time off to celebrate Easter with family, but on Saturday I did send my ideas for very simple yet organized spice storage.
- Coming This Weekend: we’re welcoming spring with some porch and patio decorating ideas, as well as my thoughts on building a peaceful life.
- What I’m Watching:
- The Forsytes on PBS, which I think is very well done.
- I also watched The Count of Monte Cristo on PBS. Some parts felt a bit slow, but I stayed with it, and I’m glad I did. Sam Claflin is excellent as Edmond.
- The Madison on Paramount+ wasn’t what I expected, but I ended up enjoying it. Just a note that there is some language, so it may not be for everyone.
- If you enjoy Regency romances, there’s a show on Amazon Prime called Seeking Persephone. It’s not free, but one evening I decided to try it, and I’m glad I did. The production is simple, but I found it very engaging, and I especially liked the actress who plays Persephone. Again, not for everyone, but a nice escape.

Novice baker here, since the parchment paper isn’t on the ends of the loaf pan, won’t it stick? Your comments, please.
Hi Sharon…I brushed the ends of the pan with butter when I brushed the loaves. They didn’t stick at all!
Thank you Ann, you are so helpful! Last question, I am using a stoneware loaf pan, do I need to adjust the cooking time?
If you’re using stoneware, the baking time should be about the same or possibly a few minutes longer. Stoneware heats more slowly than metal, so just keep an eye on the top and bake until it’s golden brown.
