The first days of the year are unlike any other. Everything feels a little slower, a little quieter, and a little softer. The to-do lists fade, the planning is over, and whatโ€™s left is a rare kind of stillness. Itโ€™s the perfect moment to take a breath, look around, and ease into the new year at your own pace. Thereโ€™s no pressure here. No resolutions, no rules, no deep cleaning. These are simply ideas to help you refresh your home, settle your thoughts, and make these first days of the new year feel peaceful and purposeful.

Let Your Home Breathe

Once the wrapping paper is gathered and the dishes are put away, the house begins to exhale. A few small touches can bring back a sense of calm after the fullness of Christmas Day. This is the perfect time to:

  • open the blinds and let in the winter light
  • fluff the sofa and straighten a few pillows
  • clear off one surface…a coffee table, a nightstand, a kitchen counter
  • organize one drawer
  • light a candle or turn on a lamp in a cozy corner

Put Christmas Away Slowly

There is no need to rush. Some years I take everything down the day after Christmas. Other years I leave the tree up until New Yearโ€™s Day. Do whatever feels right. Try the โ€œone bin a dayโ€ method. It keeps things manageable and gives you permission to enjoy the season a little longer. And if you love your twinkle lights, thereโ€™s no rule that says they have to come down at all!

Simple Recipes for the Month

This month calls for easy, comforting food. A little planning goes a long way, and it keeps you from having to make more decisions in a month thatโ€™s meant to be slow. Think soups, casseroles, sandwiches, and anything with leftovers. Here are some very simple suggestions:

A Simple Ritual for the New Year

Choose one small thing to symbolize a fresh start. It doesnโ€™t need to be big or ceremonial. Here are a few ideas: begin a new devotional, put out new kitchen towels, start a clean notebook (this one was recommended by Jami from An Oregon Cottage, and she said it was lovely,) take a walk in the cold winter air, or make a pot of soup to celebrate this month of calm.

Breathing Life Back INto the Living Room

After taking down our Christmas dรฉcor, I was left with a room that felt unexpectedly tired. The rug was worn and faded, the space felt a little cold, and everything seemed to go very still…almost as if the room had stopped breathing. It wasnโ€™t a bad room, and nothing was โ€œwrong,โ€ but it definitely felt like it was ready for a fresh start. I realized that what I donโ€™t want is a home that simply stands still after the holidays. I want our rooms to feel lived in, cared for, and gently refreshed as the seasons change. So here is my simple plan for adding life and personality back into this space. Nothing dramatic, just a few thoughtful updates that will carry us through winter and into spring.

  • Replace the rug: Iโ€™ll most likely still choose something neutral, but a new rug will give the room a fresh foundation. Even a subtle change can make a space feel brighter, cleaner, and more pulled together.
  • Add color with accessories and fabric: new pillows or throw blankets can make a room feel warmer and more welcoming. These are easy and often budget-friendly updates that can be switched out when spring arrives.
  • Bring in faux greenery, berries, and flowers: until real greenery is back outdoors, I rely on faux stems to add softness and life. A small arrangement on a table, mantel, or shelf goes a long way toward making a room feel fresh and cared for.
  • Update the small shelf: I don’t show it very often on the blog because it’s difficult for me to photogragh. But I want to completely change the look of our shelving unit by replacing the current accessories with my pitcher collection. (More on all of this to come!)

Tiny rituals carry more meaning than we realize. This week is a gentle bridge between the joy of Christmas and the hope of a brand-new year. Thereโ€™s nothing you have to do. Take your time. Enjoy the slower pace. And let these days be exactly what you need…restful, reflective, and peaceful.

Thank you for sharing your refresh for after the holidays! I loved the pillow covers and ordered two of them. Also ordered the frosted grape faux flowers. It was just what my family room needed after all the Christmas decor was put away. Happy and healthy new year!

    Dear Ann,

Thank you for such sweet reminders for the new year. I have to admit that I sometimes feel at a loss after all of the hubub of the holidays. You reminded me to step back and be grateful for the good life that I’ve been given and that times of rest and times of busyness can both be sweet. To celebrate this new happy restful day, I believe that I will try making making your Mini Chicken Pot Pies. Thanks for the recipe! I’ll let you know how they come out.
Happy sweet and restful new year to you!

  5. Merry 2026, Ann! Thank you for the introduction to Jami’s beautiful blog, “An Oregon Cottage”. I’m tickled to report she has gluten free recipes galore. Anxious to try her French Beef Stew in my pressure cooker.

May your wildest dreams come true in the New Year!

  6. Iโ€™m kind of over the staged & styled look of my living room (weโ€™re empty nesters) and I want to personalize it more this year & add in a touch more colour. Weโ€™re not dead yet lol letโ€™s add some life to our living spaces instead of looking like a store display.

Thank you, but this isnโ€™t the recipe Iโ€™m looking for. This recipe is more of a punch. The one Iโ€™m looking for is truly only the juice, lemon, and there may have been one more ingredient. It is not for a festive occasion but a detox instead.

    2. Peg, I think itโ€™s cranberry juice, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and water or sparkling water. I donโ€™t know the exact measurements but I hope this helps!

Thank you!! This could be it.

  8. I love your little watercolor pictures you’ve added, your home is so cute!
I agree to make a slow transition after holidays, my home looks too bare and lifeless without some winter greenery.
    Happy New Year!

  9. I agree, taking it slow.Happy New Year to you and your family.

  10. I have been doing exactly this. Decor came down over a few days leisurely. Living room cleaned and refreshed. Put out new placemats. I have been relaxing since 12/26 and it has felt wonderful! One day I didn’t even answer my phone!

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful post. Happy New Year.
