Make this cute decorative picture frame decor to welcome fall into your space. It’s perfect for seasonal art and is so simple!
Up today is a short tutorial for simple decorative picture frame decor that’s a great way to add texture and interest to your living space. This custom frame is a wonderful fall wall art craft to do with the kids, or as a girls night out. Anyone can do this!
Supplies Needed
- wooden frame
- peel and stick sheet moss
- scissors
- glue gun
- acorns
- pinecones
- sticks
- any other natural elements that you can gather
- September quote chalkboard free printable (see the signup form below)
My original vision for this project was to make an actual chalkboard inside a frame covered in moss and sticks. After I thought about it, I decided that a chalkboard printable would be so much easier. My biggest discovery when I was shopping for this project was finding peel and stick moss. I had no idea there was such a thing, but it’s fun, and super simple to use.
Assembly Instructions
- Measure the width of your frame, and cut 4 strips of the moss the same width. Trim the length of the strips if necessary.
- Peel the backing off, and carefully adhere the moss strips to the frame.
- With your glue gun, apply pinecones, acorns, and sticks to your frame. I started at the corners and worked out. You can embellish just the corners, or fill up the entire frame.
- I’ve linked to all the items needed for this fall craft in the list above. These supplies are also available at your local craft store. Definitely try to gather pinecones, acorns, and sticks from your yard or other outdoor area. Look for frames at a thrift store, or flea market.
- TIP: if you use natural acorns or pinecones from your yard, make sure to kill any bugs first. Put your items in a resealable bag, and place the bag in the freezer for a few days.
More Frame Decoration Ideas
- Purchase a set of picture frames and art prints, embellish the frames to your taste, and create a gallery wall. Focal points are important, and a gallery wall is perfect.
- Create living room wall decor with a modern look by placing the embellished frames on a picture ledge.
- Display your children’s or grandchildren’s artwork in decorative frames around the house. This not only adds a personal touch, but is an excellent way to make your home decor reflect the talents and interests of your family.
- Shadow boxes are deep frames that allow you to display 3D objects or memorabilia. Create a shadow box to showcase keepsakes, collections, or sentimental items.
- Hang a group of empty frames on a wall, creating a focal point in the room. You can leave them empty for a minimalist look, or add decorative paper or fabric inside the frames for a pop of color and texture.

Hi Ann,
I enjoy your blog and have been following you a long time. I want to down load the two digital cookbooks you offered – pumpkin and apple recipes. I have tried numerous times and haven’t figured out the password. Help!
Hi Val…sending you a private email now!
Thank you! What an amazing idea to bring the outdoors in. Thank you for “ALl” your inspiring lovely decorating ideas! You are truly talented!
Thank you do much! It is the perfect piece to start Fall! It is lovely!
This is such a beautiful quote! Thank you for creating/sharing. It looks like you printed an 8×10–how big can it be printed? I have a chalkboard frame that is gorgeous and it holds a 24×36 poster size print. Could this be printed up to that size without being pixelated? Thank you–Kristi
Hi Kristi…I sent you a private email!
What great timing on the fall craft! I was just looking at my summer decor and thinking I should change to fall over the Labor Day weekend. The pumpkin recipes look great too! Thanks so much, Ann.
This is just darling! I love the moss-lined frame; very sweet. And the printable is ! :) Your email was timely this morning. I have been wondering about your calendar for 2023, too—question answered! I couldn’t find the apple cookbook in the OSP member library … where should I look? Thank you for so graciously sharing with us!! :)
I think you have a real winner here, what a fun addition for fall. I would love to see a larger frame done this way and hanging on the front door. Fun for Fall!!!
Happy weekend,
Kathysue
The sticky sheet moss is genius! Years ago I saw a frame in a boutique in Vail that was entirely covered in tiny pinecones. But it was way beyond my budget. Went home and copied it with little cones from my neighbor’s yard and was so proud! Over the last twenty years half the cones have fallen off and it’s in need of a re-do. Thanks for the inspiration!
WOW! Now that’s an awesome idea:) Love it, Ann!
Love that frame. I am always drawn to nature inspired décor !
This is lovely…I look forward to trying this!
Great idea and i will definitely try it. Thanks Ann
Ann, I really like this idea. Our son and his wife love the outdoors and like to do home made or local shopping for Christmas so I may just try this for them. I’ve never heard of peel and stick sheet moss either. Pinning this idea! Thanks!!
Thank you for such a cool and easy fall craft! Looking forward to making it!
