As promised when I shared a couple of September Quote Free Printables, today I have a very short tutorial on how to make this DIY Fall Woodland Frame. I’m also joining my DIY Tips and Tricks team so those links will be at the end of the post.
What you need: picture frame, sheet moss, scissors, glue gun, acorns, pine cones, sticks or any other natural elements you can gather. (Reminder: click the yellow text (red on mobile) for links to helpful posts or sources.)
My original vision for this project was to make an actual chalkboard with a frame covered in moss and sticks. Once I got to thinking about it, I decided that a chalkboard printable would be so much easier so that’s the route I took. The heck with chalkboard paint! My shopping trip was amazingly successful because I found peel-and-stick sheet moss. I had no idea there was such a thing but it’s fun and super simple to use. Just measured the width of your frame and cut strips of the moss. Next, peel the backing off and carefully adhere it to the frame.
With your glue gun, apply pine cones, acorns and sticks to your frame. I started at the corners and worked out. You could do just the corners or embellish the entire frame.
If you can’t gather pine cones or acorns, just get a bag of fall potpourri or vase filler. All the craft stores have realistic faux items you can purchase as well. I know the chalkboard printable I used is about September…but here is a cute Trick or Treat printable you can use next month. I’ll make sure and hook you up for November as well. So…easy right?
Here are the projects my Tips and Tricks team came up with this month. These girls never disappoint so stop by if you have time.

So cute! Are you treating your acorns or pine cones at all? Last year mine got moldy and bugs!! This year I have been freezing them and then baking them to see if it will help at all. Do you have a method that works for you??
I think you have a real winner here, what a fun addition for fall. I would love to see a larger frame done this way and hanging on the front door. Fun for Fall!!!
Happy weekend,
Kathysue
The sticky sheet moss is genius! Years ago I saw a frame in a boutique in Vail that was entirely covered in tiny pinecones. But it was way beyond my budget. Went home and copied it with little cones from my neighbor’s yard and was so proud! Over the last twenty years half the cones have fallen off and it’s in need of a re-do. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Ann, I am sorry I can’t hold it back anymore. You must have HP stock for printer ink. I really do not like those chalkboard printables. They use up all my ink and paper curls. I do however enjoy your other printables and have framed many. This outdoor Frame is very clever and I look forward to creating.
WOW! Now that’s an awesome idea:) Love it, Ann!
Love that frame. I am always drawn to nature inspired décor !
Wow Ann another great project! Love the fact that the moss sheet is self adhesive, easier to use.
I think I even have a frame downstairs that will work. I’m off to JoAnns with my coupon too!
This is absolutely beautiful!!! I have to make this! Thank you for the tutorial!!! I clicked on the link for the moss sheets and it says our JoAnn’s has six in stock and I have a 50% off coupon!!! WhooHoo!!! I have some shopping to do!!! :)
This is lovely…I look forward to trying this!
Great idea and i will definitely try it. Thanks Ann
Ann, I really like this idea. Our son and his wife love the outdoors and like to do home made or local shopping for Christmas so I may just try this for them. I’ve never heard of peel and stick sheet moss either. Pinning this idea! Thanks!!
Thank you for such a cool and easy fall craft! Looking forward to making it!
