Cozy Christmas Living Room Ideas
Use these cozy Christmas living room ideas to bring warmth and holiday spirit to your own space. Includes mantel ideas, color inspiration, ribbon on a tree, and more!
Welcome to Christmas at the Sugar Maple House! Like last year, I wasn’t exactly sure how everything would come together, but once I got started, it all just fell into place.
It’s always a challenge to make a random selection of items look cohesive, especially at Christmas. When I looked at my existing Christmas decor, along with a few new pieces, I knew I needed a plan to make it all work. Read on for ways to blend the old with the new, and ideas to make your living room cozy for Christmas.
Add Pops of Red
Keeping the main color consistent is a great way to bring together a mismatched assortment of decor items. By incorporating red in every zone, I was able to make each space flow to the next.
I used red because for me, it signifies the festive and fun atmosphere that should surround our Christmas holidays. It’s bright, and there are many different shades. The eye travels from our mantel, to our tree, and to the accessories on the furniture. Of course, to accomplish this, you can use any color you love!
Add Plaid
I’ve used plaid in our Christmas decor for many years. Some years I’ve gone a little overboard, but this year I kept things as simple as possible. Two plaid pillows on the sofa, a plaid throw blanket, and plaid ribbon on the tree. Just enought to add interest and flow, but not enough to overwhelm.
If your Christmas decor needs updated, or you want to add color and pattern, plaid is a great choice.
Incorporate Fresh Flowers + Greenery
Natural elements should appear in every room, but especially during the holiday season. Fresh greenery, or a bouquet of flowers, is an easy and inexpensive way to achieve that.
So from now until Christmas, treat yourself to a grocery store bunch of flowers. (Roses are an excellent choice.) Add greenery cut from your yard, or pick some up at your local nursery. Change the water every few days, and give the stems a fresh cut. Your arrangement will last for several days!
Mix in Metals
A little bit of bling is always a good thing! I love the look of these rustic bells that I first used last year. This year I added a smaller set, and a gold star on the tree. The metal adds a different finish, interest, and texture. Three very good things!
Don’t Forget Texture
Every space needs texture. For Christmas, here are some easy ways to add it to your space.
- thick, knitted stockings
- textured or faux fur pillow covers
- throw blankets with tassels, fleece, or fringe
- items like felt balls, ribbon, and rope
- layered rugs, or add a rug over your existing carpet
The Size of Your Tree Doesn’t Matter
I’ve talked quite a bit in recent years about the decision to decorate with a big tree, or a smaller one. I used tabletop trees for many years when we lived on Sutton Place, and our home was festive and welcoming.
Since moving to our current home, so many aspects have changed, and a big tree is no longer an ordeal. The tree itself takes just minutes to assemble, and decorating it is relaxing and enjoyable.
The most important thing is that whatever size tree you choose, it’s not a stressful or difficult process. That’s definitely not what Christmas is all about!
